I think the wiring is old. What should I do?

Looks fine to me. If the phone/modem etc thats plugged in works then should be fine. Its just discoloured and dirty thats all

I'd be more worried about you carpet if you felt the need to hide it :p

Is that the cable to the modem? Extensions cables can ruin performance (but not always)

Yeah I think I should clean it. :p

An ADSL Filter is plugged in to the socket and a short ADSL cable for the router is plugged into the ADSL Filter.

Sometimes when someone phones the home phone the internet connection will drop? Could it be the house phone, router, ISP or wiring?

I have changed the ADSL Filter a few times because we could hear static on the phone. There is phones in master bedroom, Kitchen, living room and a Phone socket at main door.

I contacted Virgin with chat online and they said I should try the test socket?

I dont think your box has the test socket (How old is it?) Normally you can unscrew the front panel and it slots out revealing another socket inside, thats what they call the test socket.

no test socket on that one I'm afraid. You could make sure the ring wire is disconnected though, just google for it and loads of things will come up. If you just plug a single wired phone in to the socket and still get noise, get your provider to investigate as it will cause issues, tell them you have a noisy phone line and don't mention anything about broadband...
