ok I noticed the single IDE slot was bolted on by Gigabyte does that mean I need to install the gigabyte sata drivers, my dvdrom is not as fast as it should be and wondered if that was the problem ?
The reason that the IDE channel is "bolted on" so to speak is because the ICH8/R south bridge doesn't contain any standard IDE channels.
Intel have decided to remove this legacy standard and so by concequence there is not a single 965 based motherboard available that doesn't have IDE channels "bolted on".
However, these IDE channels are seperate from any of the SATA channels - be they the Intel integrated or Gigabyte ones.
Installing the Gigabyte SATA drivers should in no way improve performance of the PATA IDE channel.
