first proper post on the forums so bear with me..

im still kinda new to this pc gaming lark..

at the moment im using a i5 2500k oc'ed to 4.4mhz, now im just about to build a new rig with a i7 2600k.

now my question is do i really need to oc the 2600k to get the best out of games such as bf3???

thanks in advace...

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

For gaming a 2600k is a waste as games will not make use of the hyper threading. Best off sticking to a 2500k.

To answer your question though, what's the point in getting a "k" series cpu if you don't overclock it?

A fair amount of games DO make use of Hyper Threading, but the GPU will bottleneck before your CPU does, so you wont notice the difference in a lot of games.

 Mostly games only use two cores, recent games using four, but 8 threads? Nah...

The 2500K will perform the same as the 2600K when clocked the same for gaming for years to come. Why are you moving from the 2500K to the 2600K? What graphics card do you have? For BF3 a nice high end card such as the 6950/570+ would benefit you a lot more.

thanks for the replys..

gpu will be 2x gtx 580s in sli with the 2600k.

reason for the upgrade is i bought this rig with the 2500k in it and it was all pre built and now im wanting to upgrade this rig by putting 2 580s but i cant because the mobo only has 1 16x pci slot so rather than pulling that rig apart thats still under warrenty i thought id build another one.ive wanted to build my own for a long time so i know the ins and outs of my rig and when i was buying all the stuff for the new rig im building i managed to get a 2600k for i little bit more than a 2500k so i thought why not...

so regardless if the 2600k will perfom the same as the 2500k will i really need to oc the 2600k to get the best out of games???

thanks again...

Well you don't have to overclock it as it will turbo up to 3.7ghz on two cores (3.5ghz on 4), but it will help ensure you don't get a CPU bottleneck in newer games.

What parts are you planning on buying so far apart from the 2600K and SLi 580?

ok thanks for the info i bought the 2600k with the intention of oc'ing it but i kinda wanna build it first and do that later,

well ive got most of the bits bar another 580..

asus p8p67 pro mobo
8gb corsair vengeance blue
msi gtx 580 twin frozr 2( want another)
i7 2600k
1tb hdd
corsair h60 cooler
antec 1000w psu
antec df 85 case...

as the above have said not worth going for a 2600k if all your doing is gameing and as far as overclocking goes the only time you need to do that is if you have a bottle neck between your gpu or cpu overclocking removes this

kk nice build overclocking with that mobo is simple go into bios and click turbo the save and exit you chip just went from 3.4 to 4.3 with a click of a button

Not being funny or anything, but that's like asking if you should upgrade from a focus ST to a focus ST with a drinks holder, when you don't have any drinks to hold.

why because i got a 2600k when it cost more or less the same as a 2500k?

who wouldnt buy a 2600k over a 2500k if they were more or less the same price???

Which games released recently only use 2 cores?
