do i need to oc my 2600k???

the op has already stated he WANTS a 2600k so please stop slagging it and saying stick with the 2500k.good on you for wanting a 2600k,why not.anyway yes overclock the life out of it.it's what they were made for

is it seriously that easy just change them 2 things???

Yes. But it is FAR better to use Offset voltages.

Read the link i posted above for Asus P67 boards, tells you EXACTLY what you need to change to get an overclock at X Ghz.

I have 4.5 with pretty much Auto everything. 100%Load is ~1.32Volts VCORE.

Undervolt RAM to 1.5V also.

if you are half brave you can hit 4.8 with with a 2600k fairly easily on good temps @ 100% load.
If you do it via offset its even better as you are barely volting at all but still running at that mental speed!!

I use + 0.060 as my offset vcore - that will volt to about 1.45v @ 100% but the cpu barely hits 50% load under normal / gaming conditions so it barley goes above 1.3v

Even at 1.45v @ 100% load with my case and cpu cooler I hit 75c max on the hottest core in prime and after the inital heat burst of the 8k test it sits around 70 - 73c thereafter for hours - so happy days

People run them harder than that as well - I think sticking to 1.35 is overly cautious but make your own mind up!
If she blows then she blows thats my motto, but I very much doubt it, especially with the offset oc - to me thats what its there for!! Awesome Idea!!

People will shun me for this but I noticed a difference in gaming between 4.7 and 4.8 ghz on the cpu oc - thats why I have it set to 4.8 - just to add in a bit more :)

Also not 1 BSOD - touching wood now in about 4 months - you get quite a lot with this platform in games - especially BC2 when your OC is not stable.
Your PC might run fine tho - its a mental platform

well my new rig is built..

really enjoyed the build glad my mate was here to help tho i would have got abit stuck on the front panel stuff...

so i was getting it all set up yesterday all running great.i went with the auto oc im not confident enough to do it manually yet.

so the auto oc took me up to 4.4 witch im happy with as thats what my i5 rig is at and a vcore of 1.304.

i ran prime95 for over 2 hours and max temp was 66...

He is not upgrading a 2500k with a 2600k. Read the damn thread bandwagoners.

He is building ANOTHER system and wants to keep the old one with warranty intact. Listen up.

I swear some of you people have a complex over owning a 2500k. Do you need to justify it by bleating on about gaming and how a 2600k is pointless EVERY time someone mentions 2600k? If you can spend whatever you want and are not building to a budget you would always get the 2600k - It's the better chip overall ignoring cost/specific application.

OP - Do you NEED to OC a 2600k, nope. Should you? Yeah, why not. A decent air cooler and you should see 4.5GHz easily with safe temps and voltages.

4.5 is easily achievable as a 24/7 clock and I would suggest you aim for that, out for the box. No need to go further unless you want to bench.

Agreed Well said! If you have the option to buy the best specced chip in its range and have the funds then why not.

Those temps are fine, im around that area while running prime for a good length of time with a 2600k.

When you say turns on do you mean gets to the operating System or Turns on for 1 or 2 seconds then reboots and boots fully to the OS?

The latter is pretty normal, if it's freezing at a point past that (Windows Logo, Login screen etc) sounds like a cold boot problem.
