Do I need to re-apply thermal paste?

I noticed that my HSF assembly was touching the side of the retention frame, so I released the retention clips and slid the HSF sideways to try and get it in a more central position. I had to slide it a couple of times because when I locked the retention brackets, it still wasn't sitting centrally.

Because I've moved the heatsink a few times, should I need to re-apply the Arctic Silver? I slid the HSF and never took it off my CPU, but I've noticed my idle temp is about 1 to 2 degrees higher, but I'm not sure whether that's down to the temperature of the room.

Cheers, dagwoood.

I have exactly the same problem, the HSF is not sitting centrally. Is yours Arctic Freezer 64 Pro? I'm having rubbish temp, not even full load the temp shoots up above 50. Am I correct to think if my ambient/mobo temp is not good then there's no point of getting a different HSF? If my system temp is 35 and half load temp is 45 for an Opteron 170/A8N32 is this too high?

To be sure I would have it apart and re-bed the lot ;) However, I am a bit sad and if you are sure everything is now settled and the heatsink surface hasn't 'rocked' too much and you only applied a VERY thin layer of AS then post your temps and spec here for comparison!

Mind you, it doesn't take many minutes to re-fit does it  LOL

Thanks for the replies guys

Should have mentioned from the off what my cooling solution is but it's an Akasa AK-859(linky).

My idle temps now are about the 31/32 degrees mark as opposed to 29/30 prior to sliding it. Under load it's now 43 degrees as opposed to 41.

I know the new temps aren't anything to worry about, I was just concerned whether there could be any detrimental ramifications of moving it.

Thanks again, dagwoood.
