Do I need to upgrade my PSU?

Hi guys

I have a bit of upgrade itch and I was wondering if before I go buying fun stuff I should be upgrading my PSU.

My spec is:

CPU: Phenom II x2 555 (unlocked to x4 @ 3.7GHz @ 1.45v)
Mobo: Asus M4A785TD-V Evo
RAM: 4GB OCZ Obsidian
PSU: Corsair CX 400W
HDD: 3 Samsung Eco Greens
SSD: Vertex 2e
Fans: 2x 3-pin 120mm and 1 apache 120mm

I am thinking about adding another 4GB of RAM (thinking about playing around with virtual machines) the 4GB kit of OCZ platinum for >£30 seemed crazy to pass up. I have never had any problems at all with my Obsidian so I dont take the dim view of OCZ ram that others seem to. Maybe I was just lucky though.

I am also thinking of getting an X6. I figure I should be able to pay about half of the cost by selling my x2.

But do I need a new PSU? Is 400W enough for all this?

400w is fine, its a beast of a 400w that psu:) if you ever add a high end GPU then more would be nice, i take it you are using the onboard gpu?

Its good to hear you say that. It has been in the back of my mind for a while that I might come home one day to a cloud of black smoke.

Yes, I'm not much of a gamer. I actually had pretty good results overclocking the onboard. I can play some stuff at reasonable frame rates at 1280x765! Not great I know but good enough for when I play my 2 hours of games/month. :)

keep the PSU, you can add most midrange-high'ish gpus to your system and it wont be bothered by it.

Cool, thanks!

Just out of interest, what are the likely results of way overloading a PSU? Does it tend to take other components with it?

I want to feel that warm feeling of knowing I made the right decision to spend an extra £10 when I first bought the system!

The psu will safely shut down and recover and the other parts will survive, and overload it all you want, it may surprise you;)
