Just a very quick question that I can’t seem to find the answer to at all anywhere,
I want to purchase a copy of windows vista Ultimate retail version, but I have two computers at home which connect to the same telephone line whether that make a difference or not?
Do I really have to buy two copies of windows vista? Eeeekkkkk expensive

Thanks for any help Ashley

Yes.

Two different machines, they both have different signatures.

Things like the MAC code, which is the network card's own code, each one is different, so MS will know you are being naughty.

Yep, you sure do.

The license is per pc. Not per house hold im afraid.

Would be good if ms could do a house hold license. Probably cost an arm n a leg though.

They do...it's a Business/Academic license. :p

Seriously though, it'd not be worth it, as some hosues have 2 PCs, others have loads, mine has 5 at the moment for example.

You "want" to buy Vista Ultimate - most of us "want" to buy a lot of things :)
Why not look further down the list of Vista products.
Whatg is there in Ultimate that you actually need that you can't get another way?
Because one Ultimate would buy you a couple of copies of the lower version of Vista.

Licenses are still sold on a per device basis.
The only ones that aren't are the Educational ones that a lot of kids can get from college.
However even with those the institution has to keep track of individual licenses they let out.
There isn't such thing as a "site license" these days.

yes i thought that the Vista Ultimate was the only one with the 64bit ver. in it?

Yeah, that's what I was trying to get accross, but didn't do too well. :)

Ultimate seems pointless to me really, I'm running Vista Business as I can get it from my uni via the MSDNAA, and it does everything I need it to, and I know it does a shed load more aswell.

I haven't tried it for Media Center capabilities (it doesn't come with MC, but I haven't even tried just out to TV yet). But if you look at the comparison chart on MS's site, it's bull as I can do everything on there, bar maybe the MC stuff.

Business comes in 64bit, don't know about Home though.

You can get home premium 64bit, you get a leaflet in the 32bit pack telling you how to register for it, you have to pay i think it was 7.99 for shipping on it, and it takes about 3+ weeks to arrive.

Not completely related but Apple offer "household" licences for it's operating systems (called the Family pack) which covers up to 5 Apple licences for about 50% extra on the asking price

http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/products/

Maybe this should be something MS should look at, especially if their "home server" concept takes off.

But Apple can afford to do that because of the profit they make on the hardware. I'm not sure if it would be financially viable for MS.

Aye.
People forget that MS are basically a software company that happens to sell some basic hardware.
Apple are hardware as well as software, so where they lose cash on one thing they gain it elsewhere.

MS have made things a lot easier with MS Office 2007 - offering home/student to anybody who wants to use Office 2007 at home (you don't need to be a teacher or student anymore).
It's available for around £80 and can be installed on 3 machines.

Am in the postion as you...I bought and using 64bit Vista Ultimate retail version on my main PC....
But am going be builting an HTPC very soon...

So i think am just going buy an OEM version of Vista Home Premium 64bit...

Well because I can only install it once, and I do upgrade my PC a lot.

You can install it as many times as you wish on the same machine and you only have to buy a new copy if you change your motherboard.
