Do I really need a fax machine?

I am thinking of getting a Canon PIXMA MP610 multifunction printer, but it doesn't have a fax machine built in. Occasionally, I need to fax out. So do you think I should go for one with fax features built in or how about using a service like efax and just scan in docs that I want to fax out?

Anyone else in a similar situation?

Thanks,

Jon

If you have to fax more than once a week it would probably be worth getting a multi function with fax. I use a Brother 7820N for fax, scan and B&W laser printing. Best thing about it is that as a network device, anything on the network can easily connect and use all the functionality including print to fax :)

On my home network, I have two PC's that might need the printer. I'm not sure if my suggested printer is suitable for a network. Anyone know the answer to that one? Are there solutions?

Any are network suitable when connected to one machine and that machine is turned on. Ones with a direct network connection though are much easier. They can will offer full functionality regardless of which machine is on (and they can also be used as copiers, fax machines, etc depending on model).

Any of the Brother MFC or HP Officejet models will give you a built in fax. Ones at around the price of the Canon tend to have a 10/100 net connection too, but check first.

That Canon seems to have a superb review, but my only concern is the ability it to be used on both PC's. I presume I connect it to my PC using a USB cable and then just set it to share for network use?

Yep, that's how to share USB printers :)

So imagine this set up: two desktop PC's connected by cable to a wireless router. I use a laptop downstairs that has a wireless connection to the router. One of the desktop PC's has the printer connected to it via USB cable. Will the laptop downstairs be able to see the printer on the network and print to it ok?

check your wireless router to see if it has an extra port which you can connect your printer to and access it through that.

Edit : just noticed that it is usb, then the answer is no unless you can access the PC remotely from your laptop

Do you have a free phoneline for the new machine? - coz if you do, i would use it rather than get another installed by BT who will charge you line rental gleefully.
