I have a lovely old reliable 19" CRT screen which I love very much.

However I yearn for a nice slim, LCD monitor of about the same size to replace it as the monitor I have is very deep!

Will I gain anything aside from a little desk space from a change, honestly?

Text will be crisper and you'll get your desk back. But apart from that why change if you're happy?

It's kinda six of one half a dozen of the other,

On the one hand lcd does offer more space and crisper imagery but on the other I find that DVDs and Games look better on a CRT. As said above, there's no point in changing it if you happy with your current screen.

^ I'm in the same boat with a superb Hitachi 19" CRT. I've driven myself potty over the last two days trying to find an LCD that comes anywhere close to CRT in terms of quality - so I might as well bin the idea for now and buy later when the technology has caught up...

...on the other hand... :D

well your graphics card does support 2 monitors so you could use both your CRT and a TFT/LCD if you want. CRT for gaming and TFT/LCD for general use such as typing or when image quality isnt as important (swap funtions if TFT/LCD turns out better then CRT). of course it depends if you can fit both onto your desk

You'll gain..

Widescreen
Bigger size (your 19" CRT is really 17")
Easier on the eyes
Lower power consumption
Lower heat emission
Slimmer for huge display sizes
No geometry or convergence issues.
No magnetic distortion if speakers are nearby
Clear text.

But lose
CRT true blacks
Better colours
Higher refresh
LCD require AA to appear jaggy free in games
LCD have a fixed resolution, so desktop and games must be native to look there best.
