Do I really need Q6600 ?

Down to the last 2 components of my new PC to source, the CPU and HDD.

I'll be getting a shiny new GB P35C-DSR3 mobo and 4Gb Geil Ram tomorrow (big yellow and green van willing!)

Currently had AMD for the last few setups but this time wanted a change and my final A64 3200+ will be fired up for the last time soon!

Here's my sticking point. Whatever CPU I upgrade to, I'm assuming it will be a vast improvement on what i'm currenty using? So would an upgrade from the 3200+ to say the E2180 be any less impressive than upgrading to the Q6600.

Someone recommended the E2180 in an earlier thread for me, but my silly side wants the Q6600 but my sensible side says "will I really benefit from all the extra power?"

The PC is mainly used 75% for browsing and word. 15% time photoshopping, 5% Divx encoding and 5 % online gaming (EVE Online only!)

I'm not a games fanatic so will never play any of the big games like COD, UT, Doom or Crysis.

Would I be wasting the £100 extra for the Q6600

And one final rambling, CPU=Z tells me my CPU is runing at 2191Mhz, the E2180 is 2.0Ghz x 2, but I canlt belive it's just twice as powerful or am I missing somthing here?

Can someone help fit the final piece of the jigsaw of my new PC setup?

E2180 If you are going to overclock. Although for encoding the Q6600 will literally be over 2x as quick.

If you can afford it. Get the Q6600. And clock it ;)

The E2180 will be 2x as powerful as your 3200 just from the 2 vs 1 core aspect, and then there is the fact that the intel chip will be better clock for clock anyway compared with your current amd.

I used to use a P4 2.8HT for photoshop with large >over 100mb files and that was ok, it wasn't that quick for encoding though.

E2180 will be plenty unless you want to encode vid more or do serious PS stuff more.

Buy Q6600 and play Eve online while encoding and if you needed to check something on the web Alt Tab to your browser checkout what needs be and then Alt Tab back to your game or check the encoding progress before returning to your game. Realise the power of Qcore, you will be amazed :D

Just waiting for my q6600 to be delivered and I'm itching for it.

If it does'nt allow me to run UT3, Gears of War, Crysis and COD4 all at once, while rendering 10 hours video in Maya and encoding multiple .mkv files then I'll be slightly disappointed:p:D

Nah seriously if you've got the dosh get the q6600, my bruvs got one. They are astonishing. Hence Ive bought one..
