Do I upgarade CPU/MB/RAM or GPU?

I currently have an I7 8700K @4.8Ghz, 32 gig of ram and an RTX 3080 (10 Gigabyte). I use the system for VR and flat screen, mainly The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Stray, Team fortress 2 . I use a 144hz G-Sync monitor and a 4k 60hz TV to play on.

What I'm trying to figure out is, should I get an RTX 4080 or 4090 and plonk it into my current set up, or keep the 3080 and get a new MB, CPU and possibly RAM?

So I need to balance performance increase vs budget (as in a new GFX card will be at least £1000) so if that is the recommendation then it needs to get a significant performance boost over going for new CPU/MB/RAM.

Cast off in either case would go to my son

edit- I should add I love ray tracing so want to use this as much I as I can in any title that supports it.

I should have said the 144hz monitor is 1440p.

It seems like I don't really need to do anything just now?

However I see the minimum lows as a really good reason toward changing something be that CPU/MB or GPU. I'm all for a hitch free smooth experience be that on a monitor or TV or in VR, it's paramount but I also like it to look as good as I can push it

I went from a 2080 to a 3080 and saw the min FPS lows in lots of cases being what the 2080 could do as it's max FPS!. Coupled with the cost of a 3080 FE snagged from scan during the chaos it was a great upgrade.

Would a 4080 or 4090 yield similar gains on my current set up?

Would a new CPU/MB be able to achieve such an increase or anywhere close in min FPS? It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a GPU

Is it possible to get that kind of leap (or anywhere near?) at the moment from either option ?

I'm looking at this from a VR perspective too as the resolutions there can be larger than 4K and the 4090 (which I know is ******* crazy expensive) seems like a beast of a thing so if GPU bound the more power the better! (It is absolute bonkers expensive).

Edit - to reply to one of the kind posters, the 3080 performs fab most of the time, admirably in fact. I do like RT and smooth consistent framerates and between refresh rates and in game settings I can get a very nice experience with it - but there's always more More MORE!
