Do I upgrade or not....

I currently have

i7 920 d0
ATI 6970
12GB ram

is it worth me upgrading for gaming.... or would I be wasting my money?

For gaming, an upgrade to one of the latest generations of graphics card would be all youd need. The i7 920 is still more than enough for games. Btw, is yours overclocked?

Nope, all stock.

Out of curiosity what card would be a substantial upgrade to keep me going for a good few years?

don't think I am fussed Nvidia/ATI

Gtx 670 or an amd 7950, pretty much even at stock speed. The 7950 has 3gb of vram onboard, (useful at high res). A 7950 will clock a bit better than a 670, but it's a bit cheaper. Id look into oc'ing your current cpu too, i switched from a 4.2ghz 920 to the spec in sig, bit of a silly move tbh.
