Got a 2500k @ 4.4 ghz gtx 680 jetstream 4mb, 8 gig of ram.

Is it worth upgrading, or do I wait for the new release, is the new cpu meant to be that much better?

2500k is still fine for gaming. GTX 680 can still handle pretty much every game, although you'll have to lower settings for more demanding titles. I'd wait till Pascal/ Polaris and upgrade the GPU OP.

Never wait to upgrade lol I have waited and waited and waited... then i bought my parts and new upgrades came out before i even got to appreciate what i bought... vicious cycle lol

Can your pc manage what you use it for... unless you go x99, due to it's extra cores, the upgrade won't really be a massive upgrade like in the good old days.

Might be worth getting an ssd if you don't have one though, will make a huge difference :) You could also consider 16GB of ram but it really depends on your usage.

Pretty much any generation of i3/i5/i7 will likely see you good for a while yet. [email protected] will certainly not feel drastically slower than anything else, most of the new generations still have about the same headroom for overclocking.

Basically unless there's something you REALLY, REALLY want on a newer generations platform (e.g maybe an M.2 slot), wait a while longer and jump to something 4K capable.

Kaby lake will be out near the end of the year, cannon lake not too long after, AMD get their next gen CPU/APU out at the end of the year too so maybe worth seeing if that's any good.
As said, pascal/polaris are the first graphics cards that might be able to do 4k with most of the bells+whistles. The only thing you MIGHT consider is another 8GB, there's a few games around (like fallout 4) that don't mind the extra legroom. My specs below and for 1080p there's totally no need to move to anything better.
