Hey fellas

Rig in sig. As you can see I have an ageing but very capable CPU.

I plan to upgrade the board and chip soon but am quite out of the loop.

Will haswell be a new socket as seems to be Intels way?

If it is waiting is the only answer I can see

I know some of the amd chips are now better.

Are they a serious consideration?

Thanks

Jb

Forgot to mention I mainly game at 1900*1200

For gaming there isn't much point going for an AMD set up over your i7.
For encoding, you'd be better off going second hand Gulftown for all out performance.

Haswell will be on a new socket due first half 2013 as far as I'm aware.
But that socket is the "Mainstream" your true upgrade is to a 2011 setup, however core for core performance is less than that of current Ivybridge, and will be less than that of Haswell also, however socket 2011 does have a Hexcore option, whereas 1155 and 1150 don't.

riiiiiiight......

about as clear as mud.

you saying a 2011 socket is for the longer term?

i can see only 3 cpus on oc'ers for that, and only 1 is reasonably priced

Well, you never said what you're doing.
Socket 2011 could be best longer term as a hexcore SB-E going all out will be better than a Haswell 4 core with HT going all out.
But then in games where the cores won't be going all out, the better core for core performance that Haswell brings could be better.

The 3820 isn't quite as good as the 3770k which is on socket 1155.

I'd just wait and see what Haswell brings as with what your allready runnig you would have to buy top end ivybridge just to gain a small improvment which in real world usage you probably would never see.

There is socket 2011 but then your looking at £230 for the starting price of the CPU unless you want or need a hexcore intel then it goes up to £450.
