Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my cpu and have decided to go back to AMD. Is it worth waiting for the new Ryzen CPUs or shall I get the first gen ones I was looking at getting at the 2700 would there be a big difference compared to the 1700 that's currently out? It will be the non x version

Many thanks

Interesting one. I was going to wait for the new Ryzen release, but a certain large global online retailer had the 1600 and 1600x at ridiculously low prices, like £100 LESS than the original asking price, so I bought a 1600x :). The 1700 has had a price drop but not as big, so if 8 cores is what you need, it would be worth waiting, Tiny Tom Logans site has a post with what seem like reasonable uk prices and the 2700 could be cheaper than the 1700 ~£290 original asking price. As for motherboards, definitely wait for those.

The wait and see argument is logical but where to draw the line? After Ryzen 2 is out no doubt Intel will have a new line up just around the corner, then AMD again... then maybe some new beefier GPU might be available, etc, etc. There is always some new tech just around the corner.

So far to my eyes the leaks look a bit uninspiring and not really a huge game changer, however the advantage of waiting could be prices of the 1800x and Intel 86/8700x taking a bit of a dip. Certainly it seems like some retailers are almost giving away the R5 1600 this week.

Well, 11 days is easily inside that line for me, I usually am willing to wait a few months at least. There are dry spells in hardware, it not all evenly distrubuted throughout the year.

11 days. I didn’t post the standard “wait for the new platform” post. I clarified it with a time scale that edible close.

Prices are dropping on the older stuff now as it simply won’t sell once the new stuff drops, it’s coming out cheaper than the original stuff and will out perform it.

If it's only 11 days away then absolutely wait it out. I'd be prepared to wait for a month or 2 if it was that close to a new release.

It makes sense because we will get to see what kind of real world improvements the new Ryzen chips bring. As well as that I would not be surprised if Intel respond with a push towards their new H370 and B360 motherboards. They will probably want to steal some thunder too and you might catch some great deals either way.

i guess i should wait and as others have said the new motherboards will be released as well would be better to see what the performance difference is like first

That's exactly why i am asking, seeing a lot of prices being reduced and its hard not to buy one. just wanted to see peoples opinions :)

Its only a few days, besides you should be beginning to get a feel for the performance with all the leaks anyway.
I wouldn't be buying a 1700 or what not when the 2700 looks to be coming in with some good, but modest, improvements.

thing is that 2700x is going to be released with x470 boards, the b450 boards aren't going to be released until a few months down the line.
so the cost differential of 1700+b350 vs 2700x+x470 will be at least £150.
