My current media player is a modified classic Xbox. It's fine for the screen I have at the moment in the lounge, but that is to be replaced with nice ~40" Samsung panel shortly.. so I need to upgrade the media player.

Requirements are;
  • as close to zero noise as possible
  • small / neat looking
  • remote control
  • easy to use interface
  • fast wakeup
  • iplayer /4od / youtube
  • 1080p
  • streaming various file formats from file server

My file server is located an HP Proliant Microserver that is tucked away under the stairs, all my existing media is stored on there. I'm not really interested in storing anything on the HTPC.

I've noticed that the R3610 is slightly more expensive than the R3700 - a brief amount of googling brings up that the ION2 in the R3700 has some issues with regards to sound. Anyone shed any light on that?

the R3610 is more expensive, white (so won't match the telly etc) and I don't care about the lack of eSata port as all my media is on the file server.

I don't like the fact the SPDIF port is on the front though :|
 
what's it like noise wise, does the fan spin vary all the time - or just 'kick in' when needed like a laptop does?
 
that's a good question, I will be intending to do that - don't want HDD noise :D

That can't output 1080p, so is off the cards (but I did spend a while researching it just now, and it was looking good)

Question: Does the Apple TV 2nd gen output 1080p video?
Answer: No. The new Apple TV "hockey puck" is fully able to decode and play your 1080p videos using Apple's secret/private VideoToolBox API for hardware-accelerated decoding, but the video display is currently limited to 720p. The 1080p video is decoded, then down-scaled in hardware to 720p. This is low on the priority list to "fix", as it may be a hardware limitation and the ATV 2 has limited hardware resources (only 256MB RAM, etc.)

Does anyone know if there is anything new coming coming from Acer (or anyone else) in this form factor (now that fusion stuff is out)?

I was hovering over the buy button, but I have nothing to output it to at the moment - and buying the screen is going be the lions share of this upgrade!
