I currently have a Dell U2311H (nice consistent backlight, no tint etc) which, while lovely, is a little lacking in real estate. I'm currently in the first year of a degree in Computer Science, and when programming, I really do run out of space fast. I also use the screen for gaming, and enjoy having crisp whites and accurate colours.

I originally thought that I'd buy a 27" IPS like the Dell U2711, but it's just too much money for me, even at £680. So, the question is, do I simply get a 16:10 24" 1920x1200 IPS like the ZR24w or U2410, which I can afford, or do I persevere (though I have no income as such) and get a 27" 16:9 2560x1440? I have seen it said that the 24" in 16:10 format offers much of the useful real estate afforded by the 27" but I'm not convinced.

Overall, by the time I've sold my U2311H, I reckon I'd have £600 to spend, though I don't want to quite spend that much if I can help it.

PCM2, what do you reckon? Are there any alternatives that you'd recommend but I've missed?

What to do?

Having had experience with all of the setups mentioned here I would like to add some thoughts. Although the 1920 x 1200 resolution is an advanatage over the 1920 x 1080 for the type of work you do, the 'upgrade' probably wouldn't merit the cost of such a move. The extra screen real estate gained by opting for a 27 inch monitor with 2560 x 1400 resolution is more profound - but as you are very much aware, costly. If you are unable to justify this cost based on current and projected income and outgoings (I remember what it was like being a student :p) then the other suggestion of a dual screen setup is also worth considering. Speaking personally I am not a huge fan of this arrangement for extending desktop space and find it better suited to multiple seperate tasks. Everybody is different though and it might be worth trying out and seeing how you get on. If the worst comes to the worst and you don't like it you can send back the second U2311H through DSR. You may have to sacrifice a few drinks on a night out to cover the return postage. ;)

Two screens for programming is brilliant. I would really struggle to use only one screen these days.

Ah, yes probably should have mentioned.

I don't really have the desk space for 2 monitors, even if one is in portrait. Also, eyefinity set-ups for gaming don't interest me (tried it, didn't really think it was worth it).

So it looks like a 27". Wish Hazro would get on and release their 27" already. Should be more affordable than Dell's or Apple's.
