For the last few years (when not actually in the mud) I've been mainly (6-7 days a week) wearing these:
SALOMON XA PRO 3D: http://www.salomon.com/uk/product/xa-pro-3d.html

I find them a brilliant shoe, but they only last around 18 months! Rather than buy a third pair surely it's not beyond the wit of man to produce a light, comfortable, grippy shoe that's generally smart enough (when clean!), good for an off-road jog and that lasts 5+ years?

Any ideas?

It's not that I run in them every day, more I wear then 10hr a day every day, around office, garden, town etc... and occasionally run a mile or two.
