Do LTNs reduce traffic?

Two new LTNs have been installed on nearby roads where I live. Sadly, it has increased traffic build-up significantly on the main roads.
This morning, as I was walking towards the Underground station, I passed the LTN. It was distressing to see numerous cars going through the LTN with the cctv above. Clearly, they were unable to wait in the long queues as they need to get to work; and so will probably have to accept the fines.
Do these traffic neighbourhood schemes really work?
I just now see stationary vehicles with exhaust fumes billowing out.

With the way modern life in the UK has evolved and the legacy designs of most urban areas I think any benefits are likely limited in the real world and will often penalise (not in the fines sense) innocent people disproportionately to the benefits in my opinion.

Maybe they'd work if everything was designed from scratch around it.

No, of course not. Councils seem to think that LTNs suddenly make all traffic vanish, whereas the reality is that it simply moves elsewhere. We had some in Lambeth when I lived there, they were absolutely hated by all affected and have recently been scrapped. I believe this cost the taxpayer something like £2m or something stupid.

As with most things it's just shifting the problem elsewhere.

By now forcing all traffic down a particular route will just increase congestion and inevitably more pollution.

Come to think of it, it very much reminds me of the old sim city games, where if you built more infrastructure, or changed the road designs (one way, traffic lights etc) you could see the detrimental effect.

Simply put, LTNs may benefit the immediate vicinity, but don't cure the problem.

My brother’s road was blocked by flower pots to make it a LTN, it made getting to house an absolute pain and added 10 mins to the journey.

No doubt it was the brain child of the local councillor who lives around the corner from him… who’s an absolute ****.

He used to deliberately park his car off his drive to stop people using “his” road, till he got sick of people vandalising it..
He once stepped in front of me to tell me I can’t use his road as a short cut… I told him to **** off, then parked my car about 300 feet in front of my brothers house.

The funniest time was when he was telling people that they couldn’t use certain roads as short cuts when there was road works… the amount of abuse he received lol.. I pointed out to him that he had no authority to close the road till he gets the permit from the Highway Authority and until then shut up.

Funny enough he’s no longer on fb… and no he wasn’t selected as the candidate for councillor again.

they are also incredibly poorly thought out.

They made an area near me an LTN not long ago, I know why they did it.

They had one of those wire sensors going across the road, it got triggered almost constantly.
The council assumed without investigating that it was a rat run.

So they blocked off part of the estate, that basically became an ugly parking spot in the middle of the road for those stupid rental scooters.
so even if you were on a bicycle and still be able to ride past, you couldn't because of scooters...

But anyway the reason they turned it into an LTN was because people taking driving lessons were constantly triggering the sensor..... so half an estate got closed off rather than tell the driving companies to stop using it as a private training area.
no one was using it as a rat run.... it was driving instructors driving in circles.... and the LTN bollards just became a convenient place to practice reversing

I think the council got tons of complaints from residents who never wanted half the estate blocking off.

all it did was make half the estate have to drive a lot further to get out and back in... which surely creates more fumes...

it's just inconveniencing people and trying to push a problem from one area to another, redesign the damn roads instead and fix the potholes. maybe its people avoiding pot holes that are the problem.

I'd love my road to be an LTN, nice private road. That'll do nicely.

LTNs in theory are great, the problem is in practice in order for the outcome, which is usually people's behaviours changing, to happen, just doing an 'LTN' doesn't make it happen. You need 'b', 'c', 'd' and then people's habits might change. They have a safe cycle route, more than 2 trains per hour, an efficient bus route which takes 10 minutes instead of 55 minutes to go 3 miles, interconnected modal modes, amenities nearby each other etc etc.

Sadly nimbyism, planning, money, mainly money mean you'll get maybe 1/5th of the delivery of these well meaning ideas.

Train travel in this country is hilariously expensive unfortunately.

The difference of course being that I'm not attacking other posters.

And digging up other peoples' posting history.

Whilst "enjoying life".

In Istanbul.

Lol.

Give a man a fish. But give him a fishing rod

How is prat not attacking people?

I'm not attacking anyone, I'm saying you're acting like a prat. Because you are. And I'll continue saying this until you stop acting like a prat.

Of course I'm just faffing around inbetween rounds of call of duty whilst you're frothing whilst "enjoying life" in Istanbul. One of us is taking this very seriously, the other is laughing at you.

Calm down champ. Instead if policing the EV thread every day, go have some me-time. This frustration is doing you no good, trust me.
