Do Mousemats work?

I've been using my Razer Deathadder Black on my wooden desk since I got my PC and I guess it's always seemed perfectly fine. Today I've just found a Sharkoon cloth mouse mat so I thought I'd give it a go.

Apart from being a bit warmer to rest my wrist on, does a mousemat make any difference when using a laser mouse? Does the mouse track better etc?

Tracking makes little difference, I've got the Boogiebug XL surface and a Razer Destructor and there's no tracking difference between them BUT I use the surface because it stops wear on the desk surface, you'll notice the heavy traffic area gets shiny over time. My desk is expensive so I'd rather not wear the mouse area down.

Comfort when typing and mousing is the 2nd bonus :)

Edit*
The mice I use are Performance MX and G700.

A mouse mat usually improves the mouse tracking depending on what sort of material your desk is made out of and it saves the desk from getting damaged if your mouse has any sharp bits etc. and also if you for example get a cloth mouse mat it saves the mouse feet from getting scratched and worn down.
Hope that helps :)

I had a Razer MM, the texture felt similar to sandpaper, very rough but worked well. When I got my new Corsair M65 I got a free Corsair MM chucked in, it's very soft and smooth. Works better for me. I think they work well.
