My friends got a T-Mobile contract but wants a K800i. He wants to buy one on O2 and then pay them to unlock it. Do you guys know if O2 will do this subject to a charge?

Thanks :)

Actually I'm not sure if o2 lock them in the first place. Somebody else will have to confirm but I believe the plan will require no unlocking. :)

Thank you for the reply mate :) I had a 02 contract 6100 (phwoar ;)) a few years back and that was unlocked but I thought it was just the contract phones that were unlocked?

That is unless, phones4u just give you a generic phone box and an o2 sim pack to go with the phone

the last few o2 phones i've had (6230i, s700i, k700, k750i, silver k800i) were all unlocked but this was straight from o2 online.

all phones i have ever known to come from o2 have been unlocked so im kind of confirming for you that o2 do not lock the phones. alternativly if you need a 100% confirmation, ring them up

My W800i on O2 was unlocked - but again that was contract.
As somebody above said, all networks have to be able to offer an unlocking service, however they are within their rights to charge a "reasonable" amount for this service.
What is reasonable I don't know - most seem to charge around the £20 mark.

Just had a reply email from O2. They won't do it unless the handset has been active with them for 12 months. £15 charge after the twelve months is up :)

12 months wait is OFCOMs rules to give the network a chance to recoup some of the cost of the handset.

However Orange did unlock my C600 within a couple of months. I told them I was going abroad and might want to put a localised SIM in.

Ooops - yer, forgot, I think the networks can wait until you've reached the end of your initial contract period before offering the unlock service.
The phone belongs to you from day one (or rather from one you're under contract) but most won't unlock it until the end of the first year.

Third party "unlockers" - your local market stall owner can probably do it for you for about the same fee.

Not if its a BB5 if i understand correctly? In which case, £20 seems as cheap as its gonna get :)

O2 + Contract = Unlocked
O2 + PAYG = Locked!...

At least thats what I've found with the last 8 phones I've got from O2!... (6x Contract, 2x PAYG) :)
