Do Overclockers worry too much about Temps ?

I'm stress-testing my 6600 at the moment - to see how far I could go for a 24/7 setup.

I was just a bit concerned as temps in TAT had drifted up to 64C TAT under load at 1.525V Vcore (bios)

but after 30 mins of Orthos - I opened up the case - touched both the Freezer 7 Pro heatsink and the heatpipes and they are not even warm to the touch.

this compares to my P4 that was overclocked and was at 65C (case temp though) and when I did the same test - I actually burnt 3 stripes onto my finger !

so either these chips are far more sensitive to temperature or we just worry bout the temps too much ?

I have a 965 chipset if that makes a difference.

that said - the RAM - Ballistix 8500 running at only 960 MHz 4-4-4-10 @ 2.25V (stock) are HOT - you can only just about leave your finger on them ..

cheers, Mark.

There is quite a difference in heat generated by different platforms/generations.
The C2Ds seem to be really cool, I thought my 939 was good compared to the socket A but this much better
Just because a heatsink is cool doesn't automatically mean the chip underneath is as cool, if the heatsink is not seated correctly a chip could be burning up and you could still not feel much on the heatsink.

But in answer to your question, no I don't think they do. It's expensive kit we play with and temps help show how far you are pushing things and keeping them down helps general stability etc.

thanks - yes its possible I don't have a good connection with the top of the CPU - but the CPU cools down really quickly after stress test finishes which implies the heatsink is doing the business.

I remember I used to get almost that hot smell when I opened up my case with my P4 .. as you said there is quite a difference between current gen and old gen - for the better :)

P4 was only overclocked by like 400 MHz too ...

I do sometimes think temps on show all the time (like I have) are almost a bad thing -as you look down and think - oh heck - CPU is at 60C or whatever - but when it comes down to it - its stable so it can't be that bad !

We worry about temps because some of us are close to the limit and 5C can be the difference between 3.5ghz and 3.6ghz stable.

Especially with summer coming, temps at max clocks become more critical, im actually looking at water, not really for the CPU temps but the GPU temps and noise!!!

Finally have a nice cool quiet setup lol

In my old case (chieftec scorpio) with 2 papst 12db and 2 acousti fan 14db my overclocked P4 northwood C, at either 400MHz more or 700MHz more would idle at 32 in winter, 34 in summer and load temp after 24 hours of prime95 would be 42 in winter and 44/46 in summer. vcore was at 1.525 for 400MHz more and I think 1.55 for 700MHz more.

However at the moment in my new case (akasa mirage) with a 400MHz overclock my temps have gone up a lot - about 5c idle and 7-8c load. The memory is now HOT to touch if I have just taken the case side off - well it was yesturday but it was a rather hot day/evening. I am going to invest in one of those scythe kama-bays to help keep the temps down a bit as my current 120mm intake has 3 hdd's infront of it which probably doesn't help.

thanks again guys

fobose - let me know what you think of the Scythe - and whether it makes a difference as I have an Eclipse 62 case and the 120mm front fan has 2 HDDs in front of it which I'm sure don't do much good to the airflow !

Mark.

Ok I will, I am going to wait till OcUK stock it again though as they seem cheapest by about £5 although I didnt check what price delivery would be.

There are already a few people here who have one in their eclipse and say it increases airflow quite a bit, I am sure they change the fan in theirs though but I quite like the idea of a 12.8 dB fan - if not I can always change it to a 17dB I have spare :)

You think your 2 hdd's are bad, I can barely see the fan with mine ;)

excellent - sounds good - just checked out the eclipse thread and does seem to make a difference for people - so could be 20 quid well spent.

probably easier than fitting all the HDDs in the 5.25 bays ...

cheers, Mark.

Yeah I think it is, plus I dont fancy having lots of SATA cables leading to the top of my PC. It will deffinatly make the front of your case look more appealing, I hate the look of drive bay covers.

Yeah I liked his setup too, I have always hated LED's with PC's but his did look good. I dont think I would do it myself though, sort of thing I would have perhaps done if I was younger and as I am moving out soon I will have to have my PC in my room and I wouldn't want it to light up the entire room whilst trying to sleep ;)

pll say that but i never found it the case. windows open lot fresh air.room bit cooler

winter doors/windows shut, heating on full not much fresh air. not like were living in a hot place. ok get the odd days when is hot but not many

My temps in winter are 15-20, the past week its been 20-25, with all windows open and a breeze.

I had to raise fan speeds and back down FSB by 2.

I expect ill have to increase fans to max and decrease FSB by even more :(

My T7200 can hit 60degrees (when using laptop on lap covering ventilation intake) when running at 1ghz and light load without problems. Of course the silicon for merom is binned extremely conservatively so it doesn't compare to running overclocked processors on the edge of their potential performance.

well I decided to "tidy" up the inside of the case - as best I could cabling wise (and it wasn't that bad to start with)

after a few cable ties, and a few bits of re-routing.

under Othos max CPU temp went from about 63 TAT to 60TAT

and mobo temp max 49 down to 47

so worth while.

when I add the Scythe next week I expect temps to go down even more.

Orthos temps were in worst case - ie central heating was on (due to time of day) + cooking (PC is in dining room next to kitchen) - so a hot ambient of about 26C

Mark.

you can get UV leds, but they are usually clear (and glow purple). Im guessing its black case with blue leds. Its just the way i read it.

Scythe Kama bays are really quite useful if you have spare space.

Got a Sharkoon 2000 (on a fan controler) in mine, stripped the foam out too.... keeps my memory nice and cool & drops my cpu temps a fair bit
