Do people set the graphics card to be on all the time?

I'm new to laptops so seeing graphics cards changing modes when games are launched is a new thing for me to see.

On my laptop it uses an rtx 4090. But when in desktop mode it uses optimus and only when loading up a game does it change modes to the full 4090.

At the moment I let it keep changing modes. But I'm wondering if this is normal? Or do people just set the laptop to permanently use their main card?

I'm stationary with the laptop plugged in so battery issues aren't a problem.

I've always let mine auto-switch for the last 8 years or so's worth of laptops.

You can force it to always use the full fat GPU when charging but you will find that has a few side effects like slowing the charging rate and making the chassis notably warmer assuming the idle/running power draw of the 4090 is higher than the other GPU
