Today we upgraded our sky box to sky+ and a engineer came to set it up. As we were upgrading to sky+, the dish and cable needed to be change and he made a right mess of it cos........

1 He said, he couldn't take our old sky dish bracket down cos he didn't have the tools to take it off. So he put the new dish about half a meter away from where the old dish was.

2 He drilled a hole in our wall to secure his ladder to a round thing, thats still in the wall. Will see if I can remove that tomorrow.

3 Instead of following the old cable that was very tidily pinned to the under side of the house, the side wall of the house you cant see , he's put the cable straight across the wall and ***, it looks like a eyesaw,

Isnt that quite shocking guys?:mad::eek:

Its all about money nowadays, and to get the job done as quick as poss

ring em up and complain, get them to come and take the old one down, tell them why he couldn't take the old one down, and laugh at them and ask them if they employ monkeys to do the job

Also if your house is white, tell them you want white cable to blend in.

Sounds like the same guy I had. He was spouting health and safety from the moment he arrived, didn't have the correct tools to take down the old bracket so he actually fitted it to my neighbours side of the chimney stack. He dropped his hammer which slid down the roof and almost fell through a velux window below. Really wish I'd complained at the time but I was just glad to get up and running as the Ashes were on. :)

Could he have not used the old dishes bracket? Just fitted a new dish there and removed the old cables and ran new ones in there place?
I find a lot of these people make there job harder.
In my old house sky sent out a "3rd party" Oh god never again. It was snowing and he was moaning, huffing and puffing i thought if you dont like the job why do it?? Im sure he wanted me to say oh dont bother its ok.

Not a Sky fitter myself but ..

He's most likely not allowed to touch the old dish & wont be paid for it.
He has to follows H&S to the letter or face the sack.
He probably has to use supplied materials & tools.

I bet they do around 7 jobs a day all within specified times.

Its the Employers who are monkeys.

shocking ? No not really

#1 is understandable, likewise #2

and #3 you should have asked him to tack it before he left if it bothers you.

as already mentioned the hole in the wall is for health and safety, it securely holds the ladder against the wall, you should try it if u ever have to go up a ladder against a gable end...it is so safe and feels safe also.......if a sky engineer is seen or reported not using this method he faces instant dismissal.....

he should have at least filled the hole after the work was completed....

im an aerial/sat installer and everything i do is passed with the customer first, any disagreements are then quickly dealt with.

not all engineers are the same, and its the same with customers, some customers are just a nightmare to work with, at the end of the day we are at your premises to install equipment what you require to a good standard....there are too many installers out there who dont give a damn.....

who do you blame for a bad job? the installer who is probably on a crap wage and works in all weather with too much to do the day he visits you? or the company that employs them?

i couldnt do 7 jobs a day as i spend too much time on routing cables as neatley as possible and getting the job done to an excellent level to how i would like to have a job done on my own home...

rant over lol.....

They may be on a bad wage but at the end of the day it's a job they have gone for so they should do it.

Always more jobs out there that are/can be better paid if needed.

Did you sign the job card to say it was satisfactory?

As for the hole in the wall, they would have asked you first, they have to do it. Usually they put a cap in the hole. They do not usually leave the ring in.

mine installed the other day

did a brilliant job, couldn't have asked for more

i guess its luck on the day as to the installer that turns up at your house

I think people are misunderstanding #2 - he hasn't left a hole - he's left the actual clasp in the wall too from the way I read it.

They outsource the work so id say give them a ring . You have a right. I work in the industry myself and deal with things like this the whole time

only problem i can see is itll be the same bloke who shows up

He wont be a happy man :)

My mate said the same happened with him. Sky engineer came round, almost put a crack in his window he drilled a big hole so close to it. So his dad told the sky engineer he'd do it himself. :p

How much are these guys on - I went for interview a few years ago and it was 16K + van + benefits. Some of the people at the interview day were really quite something.

At the end of the day, he should have done a decent job of it to begin with, Plus the only way he can rectify it, is either lengthening the cable or starting a fresh with the cable routing in the same path as the old cable.

He didn't even take all of the old cable down, Instead of climbing the ladder to get at the cable he couldn't reach, he just cut it off:eek:

Yeah when we had the old cable put up about 20yrs ago when we first has sky, the engineer did a super job of the cables. Guess it was too much like hard work for this guy to take all the old cable down and follow it in the the same path as the old cable when putting the new cable up.

As I have seen so many of these, I agreed with Sky to pre-install the cables myself. I left a couple of metres hanging for the dish install and I got exactly the job that I wanted. My neighbour wanted multiroom and had it installed whilst he was out (his mum waited for the engineer) - OMG!!! They have run cable from downstairs, clipped it to the stringer of the stairs, around 2 doorframes and into their bedroom. I would have freaked, his wife did.
On the other hand my dad had sky+ installed in his bungalow. Lounge is at the front, dish is at the back. Engineer ran the shotgun cable through the loft (Back to front) then dropped it parallel to a drainpipe down the front and into the lounge. Lovely neat job. Their neighbour tried to get the same install done and the engineer refused, siting he wasn't authorised to work in confined spaces - ie the loft, so he tacked the cable all the way round the eaves.
