Do the US have MOT type tests?

I am watching Channel 5 US, and they are 'pimpin' a limo. It is a total reck, no rear lights, a door missing, the roof peeled open in places totally rusted out. If this car was loose on UK roads, I could imagine the police having a field day on it, which begs to question, do the US have any vehicle testing laws?

Nope. No MOT equivalent in the US.

What he said. One of the reason I believe (trying to think back to when Mickey answered the question) is the amount of wreaks that are currently on the road! :o

Some states have a periodic inspection but most do not. Ohio certainly does not except for a program called e-check that tests the functionality of the exhaust system. E-check, however, is a scam becasue it only operates in the most populous 14 counties EXCEPT for the most populous county of all that just happens to be host to the state capital, Columbus. It's BS.

It's up to the cops, for the most part, to spot equipment violations. Usually you'll get a fix-it ticket (a warning) the first time and a real ticket the second. Equipment violations do not count as points on your license.

No, annual testing at a DMV testing facility. Then you get the certificate that it passed which you take to get your tabs (tax disc). Without passing emissions, you won't be legal to drive the next year.

I heard emissions testing is real strict in california, is that down to the police to pull people on
I'm not sure how it's done there but here it's done every two years when you go to renew your license plates.
