5th is the automatic place. There is also a place for the FA Cup winners (or the runners up if the Cup winners have a European place already), the League Cup winners (or it goes to 6th in the league if the winners already have a European place), plus a 4th spot to the winners of the Fair Play league.

I believe there is also the possibility of the FA overriding certain decisions based on legal loopholes, I heard a rumour that if Portsmouth win the FA Cup they might possibly be denied entry into Europe.

That's already confirmed I believe, something to do with them not being able to afford the registration fee or something like that?

Thats correct, a team must be registered by a certain date in order to be eligible to play in Europe the following season.

Pompey couldnt afford the registration and have missed that cut-off date. Which means that if Pompey win (or indeed are runners up) the cup, they cannot compete in the Europa League next season.

What this will mean for the qualification spot should it be a Chelsea v Pompey final, I dont know. I am guessing that they would make 7th place in the Premiership an additional Europa League slot instead.

I think they'd pretty much have to award it to the next league place. Fairly sure that's what has happened in the past when the cup final has been played between two teams who qualified for the CL via their league position.
