i noticed these and just woundered if they actually made a difference or they were usless

I suppose its to protect the gfx card from when a PSU blows up, I think all this does is let is fry it through the mobo instead.

I think its pointless and a waste of money, get a mains supply one instead...

As said, get a proper mains supply one instead. This is a gimmick.

With a proper one you are not only protecting your whole PC but everything connected to the socket too, and they often come with a couple of grands worth of insurance for free too now.
