Hi :)
I'd like to know if the following work ok on vista before I consider wiping my pc and starting fresh with something other than XP...

Steam games:
Half Life 2/Portal
Left 4 Dead
Rainbox Six Vegas 2
Peggle!! :D :D

Others:
LOTR B4ME 2
Spore
Sims 3
TheHunter
C&C 3
World of Wowcraft
Quake 4

Any of these likely to cause grief? :)

Many many thanks indeed!

Half Life 2/Portal
Left 4 Dead
TheHunter

Are ones that I know are ok under Vista x64, as in I have them and have played them. Not done any direct comparisons of XP Vs Vista with them, checking fps etc but they do run with no issues.

if you're moving to 64bit vista, hl2 can cause problems for some in 64bit mode (steam will update the game if it detects a 64bit OS). it's easy to tell, the AI get stuck and there's a message on screen.

you can workaround this by adding

-32bit

as a startup parameter to the game shortcut and all is well again.

Mine ran fine in x64 mode untill i upgraded to 8gig of RAM then I had to do that to get it to work

I've ran Vista 64 for ages now and I've never had any problems with HL2, Portal, Peggle, Spore, Sims 3, WoW.

That was only years ago when there was a seperate 64bit version been fixed for a while now.

To be honest, you might as well wait two months and go straight to Windows 7. Seems a lot more stable games-wise than Vista did when it was released.

They all work fine, though you might find the hl2 engine crashes on exit and alt-tabbing too much (but thats been universal in both xp32/64 and vista 32/64 just a fore warning that it happens abit out side of the os you use)

One problem you might get is that DirectSound3D games won't do surround sound or EAX in vista. AFAIK only Creative Audigy/X-Fi, Realtek HD onboard and Asus Xonar sound solutions currently have workarounds to bring it back.

Bledd,

You are correct -- test drive Win 7 and then purchase it when it is released October 22nd. If you wish to try Windows 7, you may want to hurry up and download Windows 7 RC while you still can. Come August 15th the Win 7 download will no longer be available. The Win 7 RC can be downloaded directly from Microsoft
If you enjoy your experience with the RC version of Win7, you can now pre-order your copy of Windows 7 for a discounted price! For more information, see the Windows 7 Pre-Order offer page
