Do trays/platforms exist to mount a PC out in the open?

I was wondering why people who overclock don't mount their systems out in the open on something, surely this is the ultimate cooling solution.

Therefore why are there no dedicated trays to do this? Is it a health hazard?

I don't overclock but it would be great for easy access, few fans etc.

I have something like a clear acrylic base in mind..

It would get very dusty and be difficult to keep clean. I think it would also take up more space than a conventional case as effectively it would only be two dimensional instead of three.

Do a search on HSPC Tech Station. I think you'll find that's about what you are after. The reason people put PCs in cases for cooling basically comes back to the whole issue of air flow. An open PC just heats up the air around it. As the temperature of the air becomes closer and closer to the temperature of the PC components, it becomes a very inefficient means of cooling. A closed PC with air passing through it (especially at high speed) means that the temperature differential between the air and the PC components is always big enough to make the heat transfer process quite efficient.
