what with the BC2 is crap and crysis is crap , STO is crap , do we hype games up to much these days only to get disappointed with them , or are developers getting greedier and simply wont produce or develop the games fully ?

You seem to have forgotten the effect of publishers on the industry.

Hmm
I don't think you can ever expect too much from games :)
I do believe that a lot of developers solely look at profit and develop those games that they believe will return the most (look at the sims for example) or they simply end development and release unfinished buggy games.
I hope that this behaviour will cease and they will realise that PC games can be profitable for them, but that we are a discerning bunch and wont generally buy a load of dross.

Actually when I said developers, I meant publishers, :)

One example that comes to mind is KOTOR2. Lucasarts refused to even give Obsidian permission to release a content patch for the game post-release when they'd had a chance to finish their intended story\areas. Not to mention the Christmas 2004 release deadline to grab holiday sales.

No not really.

A game that delivers can be, quite simply, amazing. Hoping for that from games that have been given a lot of hype is not too much to ask.

Games that delivered for me (Im not talking about just games I like, but ones where after 5 mins of playing I get a huge grin on my face and just go, yeah, thats right, they nailed it):

Fallout 3
Oblivion
Mass Effect
Portal
Rome TW
Call of Duty 1
Red Alert 1
(and a few more I cant think of right now).

Its rare that I get excited about games these days - Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age are the few exceptions.

Portal, for me, was just like a punch in the face. I expected nothing but a tech demo, then BAM! One of the best games I'd played in the last few years. Those are the kind of suprises I like, and its why I try not to get too hyped up.

a lot of devs line them selfs up for a fall when they hype parts of a game up so much that it would be impossible for those bits to live up to the hype.

just look at all the warhammer online hype machine everyone thought it could be the next big mmo then it comes along and its pretty crap and nothing like it was made out to be.

devs dont help themselfs when they release screenshots that have obviously had massive photoshop work done to them either like codemasters did with the race driver series

Well yeah, I think we overhype pretty much everything... Isn't that just the way it is though? Let's be honest, if you keep your standards exceedingly high and something comes along and meets them, then hell... you'll love the fact your standards are high - and you're finally playing something which makes you appreciate games.

Although you have to go through the odd Leisure Suit Larry before you finally find this game, sadly :|

We will see with things like Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 what we should expect from fully finished games.

gaming seemed better when all you knew about a game was the title, box cover and what a reviewer said.

you know nearly everything about a game before its even released now

Agreed, I've recently given myself a new rule; to never read any reviews or enter any threads about games i am looking forward to. I'm even refusing to look in the high res screenshot thread as it may have something to do with Mass Effect 2 in it. So far this technique is working, i didn't have a clue what to expect when i first fired up the game and i'm being pleasantly surprised. I'm also adopting this technique for Final Fantasy XIII, Heavy Rain and God of War 3.

Those in the know will expect a lot from games as we have probably soaked up every bit of text, screen grab, movie and sound bite about a game one to two years prior to release. If you have an insane interest in something it is to be expected. It is hard to ignore such information and lock yourself away from it when this is the case. Kudos to those above who say they can and probably get a better experience from titles such as ME2 where story and characters are a big part of the production.

We can hardly stop developers and publishers talking up their product so can we be blamed for expecting to much? In the case of Dragon rising for example, then no. The devs and publishers released information and media about a game that was never released.

However there are some people who play a game for 30 mins to an hour declare the title carp, proudly state on these very forums their disgust for the title like some frackin headline grabing tabloid monkey, and ostentatiously declare that they are 'taking it back' or 'trading it in' (you know who you are). This was seen recently with the release of stellar titles such as Assassins Creed 2, and to a lesser degree Darksiders. I think in this case then yes, maybe some people do expect to much from games.

;)
