Your Dad's car is a nice looking example Phil!

He's over the moon with it. Very very well priced given the age and condition etc, something about being an ex-mitsubishi show car was mentioned by the dealer too.

Quicker I've ever know him to go through a tank of petrol, trying to persuade him towards decat and a remap now :D

The AYC on the Evo6, Is it really only Evo specialists that can service this? Does this have to be done every 4500miles also?

Would you only trust a Evo specialist to service the car? I am happy servicing cars my self, especially at every 4500 miles. Bigger jobs will be left with my mechanic if need be.

Got that daft car urge again. This is a car that needs ticking off my list, can't quite afford to tick off a R34 GTR just yet :p

i love how we both got AD08s at roughly the same time. and we both need them replacing shortly after :D

I've done about 10,000 miles on them. I was meant to put the F1A2's I have on the car just haven't got round to it (plus a long and boring story about how 3 of said tyres are in Fleet yet one remains in my garage). After the meet on Saturday at some point I'll be going down and dropping the car off for some more work.

£6k seems to be a good budget for one of these.

Can someone break down the costs of expensive things that are known for failing?

Turbo can be had for £600 refurb'ed
Is the AYC strong?
Gearboxes and clutches?
Service parts seem reasonable. What oils are recommended?

Would you touch a Evo that doesn't have full service history? Not bothered about modified cars, standard GSR will do nicely.

Anything else to look out for or to consider?

Who are your insurers? I am with Greenlight, will ring them for some quotes. Though i think i will be better off waiting till Jan, when i turn 25.

What Evo are you after with £6k?

I personally prefer the 5. Looks better and nicer interior. With that budget you should get a decent one. I'd worry about rot underneath before thinking about AYC and Turbo's.

Can I join this thread ... purchased last sunday a 2003 airtrek turbo r with apprently an evo 7 engine. It has a top mount i/c and a td05, auto / tiptronic though :( but nice to drive. Very rare ... will post some photos when I have cleaned it and its stopped raining.

I know mpg is not relevant for these cars but is around 110 miles for £40 average? ?

Is there much difference between the 8 and 9?

MilanoChris - how are the running costs of the Evo?

I'm considering getting something entertaining next year - can't quite stretch to a B7 RS4 but I can do a late EVO or Impreza.

Had my 7 serviced at RG a couple of weeks back. Looks like the last 2-3 years of spending relatively little may have caught up with me :p

Next year it will need:

  • Rear lower inner arm bushes replacing
  • Transfer box replacement (no great surprise given the noise it's been making)
  • Brake Pads
  • Undersealing (the existing work is coming away - moreso preventative work)
  • New 3" turbo elbow/downpipe. Current one is modular and hangs too low, causing it to catch on speed bumps, and has the knock on effect of making the rest of the exhaust hang a bit low.

Add that lot to half the stuff I would like to do to it, and it's going to be an expensive year!

Still looks alright for an old girl though ;) :

I thought they had a slightly detuned evo 6 engine. Not that there's much difference. I've seen a few that have been modified to produce a fair bit of power. Simply by adding more evo parts and remapping

As for fuel. I average around 180 miles to a tank which is about £55-£60. So your 110 sounds about right. Especially with the auto box.

Looks like buying a dealer car turned out to be a wise move by my Dad.

Noticed second and third we're very notchy so took it down to JamSport for a second opinion, syncro's are buggered. Warranty will cover the bill for the gearbox rebuild and it'll be getting a new clutch in there too.

After this pretty much everything that can/will throw a big bill will have been replaced in the last three months bar the turbo
