Do we think "tray" AMD CPUs will be available at some point?

Just watched the Tech Yes City YouTube video on the "Snowman" CPU cooler. Seems to get pretty good thermals and low noise - far better than the OOTB cooler for the 3600.

Anyone know what the score is on the AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPUs being available at some point in the future without the boxed cooler? Was thinking maybe they'd be £10-15 cheaper, pretty much covering the cost of a better cooler (or at least a decent chunk of it.)

Thoughts?

I was just too busy drinking and partying when i was younger, my first pc was a P2 350mhz with 4gb hard drive, 64mb ram and 17" crt monitor for £1000 from the big pc chain, it's the only pre built pc i ever bought.

I'm just going to say: 6502 1.1MHz with 5KB RAM and a cassette drive and a TV.

You kids, you don't know you're born.. :D

Alright Grandad, just googled it, was that pre Apollo one ? :D

Apollo 1 computer cost millions - even back in the day. And it ran at a whopping 2MHz! I couldn't afford that kind of state-of-the-art. :D

To quote: "The [Apollo 1] computer's performance was comparable to the first generation of home computers from the late 1970s, such as the Apple II, TRS-80, and Commodore PET"

That's the kind of computing power we eventually got in affordable computers in the UK in the early '80s - so you weren't far off. ;)

But why? The Wraith cooler is good enough and you do not need anything bigger, except if you have the 3900X.
The AMD cooler is superb, not the cheap crap.

Because the alternative coolers provide even better cooling performance and are much quieter. And, like the Snowman, can be bought very cheaply. Win-win.

Get them listed, or let me buy you lunch and have a dig through them one afternoon.

He should buy a job-lot of the Snowman coolers and sell them with a tray 3600 processor in a bundle. I'd be prepared to pay an extra £10 over the retail unit for the bundle with the better cooler - and not have the cost/hassle of getting rid of the retail cooler. ;)

There is not even a need to sell the cooler in my opinion (at least for the 6 core X model).

The cooler on my 2600X is more then adequate. The chip runs cooler with the AMD cooler, than my intel chip does with after market cooler.

I run a silent PC build, as I use the machine all day for development work. I'd rather pay a small extra amount for a quieter cooler and lower temps. ;)

And I believe the "X" actually ships with a better cooler - I was looking at the 3600 regular. Price difference more than covers the better cooler.

Under load the AMD cooler is quieter than my intel cooler under load ;) and both are as quiet as each other idle.

So for noise AMD cooler wins again. :)

Now of course if I got a top of the range noctua cooler it might be different. But the AMD cooler is beating a £60 after market cooler.

Intel stock fans are not a great comparison point, though. I replaced mine with a sub £20 Arctic unit and it was a night-and-day difference to both noise and temps.

To quote the Tech Yes City video of the $17 Snowman cooler: "it [also] came in with considerably less noise"

I run three Noctua fans in my current rig, so I'm aware of their great performance and (unfortunately) price. But here we are talking about coolers costing sub £20, not "a £60 after market cooler." :)
