Hoping someone has seen this fault before!
My wifes PC has just died. When you hit the power button it 'blips', i.e. the PSU and everything attached to it powers up for about half a second then switches off again. I've tried switching PSU's with the same prob. I unplugged everything not needed for POST and still got the same deal - I even removed the board from the case and tried it like that - same problem. I suspect the mobo is bust, does anyone have any other ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, got a new Socket A mobo, installed all the bits hit power. POSTS fine, but after a couple of mins (varies) the system powers off! I can't think what could be causing it! It has a 500W PSU!! Any ideas guys?
Cheers

If it shuts down after a while it sounds like possible CPU overheating protection.

I would check your CPU cooler is installed properly, also if your mobo has it check the CPU temps in bios. If your CPU cooler isnt installed properly you should see your temp climb pretty rapidly even in BIOS.

Thanks for the tip. CPU temps were topping out at 55 degrees at idle!! so could easily hit higher temps during windows setup. Unfortunately the bboard will not even post now! Have tried another Athlon xp 2000 and a duron 1300, and it still won't boot! All the fans spin but no video and the lights on the keyboard flash repeatedly, no beeps. I've swapped ram, graphics, PSU etc. all to no avail. Maybe all the shutdowns have bust this mobo 2? I'm rapidly running out of ideas...

If you are installing a much slower CPU it might be that the board still tries to feed it your faster CPU speed and killing it.

Try clearing your CMOS if you havent already done so. If you have already done it, it sounds like you might have another dead board.

just a quick thought, you have installed the spacers between the mobo and the back plate of the case. If not this can lead to shorting out and killing of mobo.

Thanks for the help guys. There is no backplate on the system and while the PSU is both fairly cheap and fairly old, it is the second PSU I have used for this machine. Since it stopped booting at all I have tried two more PSU's with no improvement. Am well stumped

I found the problem with the original board! Faulty capacitors! They're all domed and leaking, apparently it's a common fault with 2-3 year old boards (especially Gigabyte like mine). The failure seems to have screwed all the attached components too and they've screwed the new board! Arse!
