Do you believe in Hypnotism?

A hypnotist and hyponotism is a stage act. Hypnotherapy performed by a hypnotherapist is the scientific, practice approach.

What all hypnotists or just stage ones?

Why are people making comments that there is a difference between 'medical' hypnotists and stage ones?
I've got a mate who by day does the 'medical' hypnotherapy and by night used to do a stage show - no difference, same techniques.
True story:
One night his band played at The Talbot Hotel in Stoke and after the gig some of the crowd wanted hypnotising so we went into the pool room.
He'd got several people under and then turned to one guy and said "There is a beautiful woman lying on the pool table, legs akimbo and you've got to make love to her".
The bloke dropped his keks, stiffy on and proceeded to make love to the air in front of everybody.
Sam turned to me and said "Bugger, he's faking it, I can't make anybody do something that they know they're not supposed to do".
After the impromptu performance and he 'bought him round' his friends told him what he'd done and he went after Sam.
Sam told them that he was faking because hypnotism doesn't work like that.

ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD

i love the sound that makes :)

Went to a couple of shows in Majorca. The second time I volunteered and I could feel myself slowly going under but in the end I was concentrating too much so it didn't work, worked on plenty of others though.

All, but mostly the ones seeking attention, they just mess with your mind.

I don't believe they can make anyone do what they want.

That's the point. They can't, it's a complete fallicy. But that is not what hypnotism is about and it certainly does not mean that hypnotism is in any way fake.

I have been hynotised a number of times, and so my my girlfriend.

She went to get cured for her absolute fear of flying. She is not cured, but much much much better.

I went as I had difficulties presenting to large groups of people. I'd get really nervous.

I was totally sceptical, and thought it was a load of old tosh.

I had about six sessions. Mostly just relaxation, then we did regression. The wierdest thing I've ever done. I can't really explain it. But basically, I was a kid again. I had all the same old feelings and anxieties I had when I was going to pre-school!

I now give talks all around Europe to very lage audiences! And I'm only a little bit nervous (as you woudl expect to be)

Definitely works.

I have been hypnotised. Had major anxiety for no reason during my GCSEs and simply couldnt control it myself due to the fact i consciously had no reason to be feeling ill before my exams and everything i did... eventually the docs sent me to the hypnotherapist and i must say i didnt think much of it.. but i stuck with it and i got better quickly after.. didnt suffer through my a levels or my uni exams thus far.

My cousins wedding also had a hypnotist who hypnotised my cousins mate and my uncle. Both situations were really weird but highly entertaining to watch and my sceptical side was determined to find something wrong but in the end i just enjoyed the spectacle they were being made of.

a few friends got it done to them at uni last year, one was sick on stage and the other it did not work for. I think it depends on the person whether it would work or not

Its a dodgy area tbh....

I don't believe nor have seen any real evidence that a hypnotist can actually put someone into a trance state. Stage hypnotism relies on things like the suggestibility of the participants, willingness to take part, pressure of being on stage in front of an audience etc..
A lot of the extreme stuff/acts achieved on stage isn't likely to be achieved 1 to 1 with the hypnotist.

I'm sure it has therapeutic benefits - i.e. getting people to give up smoking, get over a fear of heights etc.. but still relies on the participant to believe in it working in the first place. Nothing 'magic' about hypnotism at all tbh...

I was watching a repeat of Top Gear on Dave and Paul McKenna hypnotized Richard.

Now I have always had doubts about Hypnotism. For some reason I have always thought "it's not real, they just pay the people and make them sign a NDA".

But the fact that it's still going on leads me to believe that people can me hypnotized and made to do funny stuff etc.

Interest in your thoughts on the matter.

I wouldn't use top gear as a marker of whether something is genuine!

It's not a matter of belief.
It's well researched. But you have to be willing to be hypnotized and even then they can't get you to do what ever they want.

I was going to say that I can't believe how many people don't recognise hypnotism as being real but I was 30 before I saw the light.
You're right, hypnotism isn't magic and most of us have things suggested to us every day without giving it a second thought.
Some people are more suggestable than others but nobody will ever do anything that they don't want to do.
I really wish I could be hypnotised to know what it feels like.

To be hypnotised you have to have an open mind.
When on holiday in Benidorm when I was 14 my mum went up to be hypnotised but it didn't work on her, we went back on our last night and we were watching him put people under, then the DJ noticed that I had gone under as well so they asked my mum and dad if I could take part in the show!!

Like others have said you are aware of what you are doing but have no control over it.
The guy really stares into your eyes when he is talking to you and giving you your instructions.
He went down the line and told everyone when he tapped them on the head they would sleep and they did, then when he came to me he said when he tapped himself on the head I would sleep, he did it then my head dropped and I was out of it!

Best thing is they say one hour of hynotic sleep is equivlent to 8 hours normal sleep so when I got up the next morning I felt fantastic!

Syphs wife 2 be.

I don't believe in it, but my mate was once hypnotised to bark like a dog every time his missus played his favorite tune - Wicked Games by Chris Isaak!
