Do you blog?

I read plenty of blogs, mostly technical (programming, software architecture), a few about stuff I find interesting also like current affairs, and a couple of random semi-technical semi-personal blogs I've stumbled across. Without them and google reader my quiet days at work would be hellish!

Ah thanks fast posters.

Biohazard- surely unless you're libellious they can't do such a thing? Freedom of speech and expression and all that? :o

Oh no they can. I signed the Official Secrets Act. While nothing I posted was relevant to the act, they decided to become ignorant thick ***** and raised the flag pole that day. I retracted, and contacted the local press/media instead.

More than one way to skin a cat. I eventially got a written appology from some nonse down south.

I did have a blog for a while, which I began with every intention of reguarly posting useful stuff related to software development. I soon found that I wasn't able to post anything of sufficient quality as regularly as I wanted, and most of what I wanted to post had already been covered much more thoroughly by blogs like Coding Horror (I don't know how Jeff Atwood finds the time to post so much) so I ended up posting mostly "nothing" entries on other stuff that I'm pretty sure were of no interest to anyone. Even the spammers shunned my blog. So I gave up.

The final straw was that I gave my 9 year old son a blog at the same time I started mine, and his was much more interesting!

My brother and sister in law moved to Chicago a year ago from London, and she writes a blog to keep friends and family up to date. Fortunately she's a professional writer, so it is interesting and humourous.

Blatant advertising I know, but it may be of interest to anyone thinking of a similar move:

I don't have a written blog as such as I'm not so pompous that I think my life would be even remotely interesting to anybody else, I do keep a photoblog though but the only text accompanying the photos is objective, non personal and only related to either the place the photo was taken or details on the photo itself.

but you are pompous enough to think that people are interested in looking at your photos?

I don't really update my blog so much right now. It's really difficult to write coherent things when life's just so crazy busy. I've started writing things down that I might like to write about one day. I'm not pompous enough to think that people would actually read it, but I enjoy writing it enough to carry on. I get excited when Google Analytics tells me I have 60ish hits a day, and Feedburner tells me there's 20 people reading my feed, so that's quite nice!

Coding Horror (I don't know how Jeff Atwood finds the time to post so much)

he recently went full-time to concentrate on blogging, so he'll probably be posting more

He does seem to be posting more frequenty, but I don't think it is his intention to go full-time on his blog (in the relevant post he said "I refuse to become a full-time blogger.")

yeah, but he quit his job to concentrate on blog related opportunities, or whatever the phrasing was he used. I guess he was being purposefully vague, but he'll probably go into speaking or something like that. It does make me wonder what he's like in real life.

According to the post he "has a little micro-ISV startup opportunity I'll be working on" and he emphases that he wants to "build stuff and talk about it" so it sounds like the blog will become a communication vehicle for that enterprise (hopefully in addition to the sort of stuff he posts currently). Must be something pretty compelling to leave Vertigo, as that sounds like an interesting place to work.

Whats the best way to try and promote a blog?

My friend and I (actually I have multiple-personality disorder) need to try and get the visits up.

Tis a challenging time.
