Do you class swearing as the norm?

No. It really pees me off as it shows a considerable lack of control and intelligence.

Unfortunately it is simply far too ****ing common nowadays.
Some people treat it as normal language and simply cannot fathom that they are swearing in such an abundant ****ing manner.

I'm an engineer. I haven't come across anyone in the company I work for who doesn't swear profusely. I think most swearwords are actually legitimate engineering terms anyway.

That's just pretentious horse **** to be honest. Just because someone swears does not mean they lack intelligence. Sometimes only a "go **** yourself" will suffice in getting your point across. Instead of the pseudo intellectual war of words that does nothing but go in circles, achieve nothing, except make wordy people feel better about themselves or superior to others.

It is seemingly more prevalent amongst the uneducated/disadvantaged and teenagers from what I have seen: take prison for example. Not that I have been to prison.

I swear too much, and I tend to agree with ethan. In some circumstances it's acceptable, but I feel people (including myself) often lack the vocabulary to articulate things properly and end up being lazy and swearing.

No, despite me being raised by a father who used to swear a lot I really disliked him for it.

Now, when I am out and see people swearing in front of others especially young children it really annoys me and I feel embarrassed that an adult doesn't think about they are doing. I guess as others have mentioned intelligence has a lot to do with this.

I do swear but usually at my computer or would mutter it to myself when something annoys me but never at someone or in front of others.

This.

In the real world i try to say as little as possible, swearing does not really come into it, but it entirely depends on the situation.

+1

I know plenty of intelligent people who swear a great deal, so I don't think it shows a lack of intelligence.

No I think it is unnecessary and have been making a conscious effort to not do it. To the extent that it now surprises people when I do swear. I tend to do it when I'm cross or in an extreme reaction.

I do think it's overly accepted now which is a shame as I don't think it should be part of common parlance. However, I don't see it as something that "dumb" people do as plenty of people do it now as part of habit rather than anything else.
