Back in the day first starting out custom Hardware

I managed on a Mainstream end hardware eg
Athlon 64 3000+ & a little 6600GT
i was happy to get Good frame rates.

1080p was good enough it was way better than consoles. & buying a decent card would be sufficient for 60fps+

however after trying 1440p, i found it very hard to go back to 1080p
then i stupidly bought 4K. loved & hated it.
then i got another 21:9 monitor (x34A)

it would be very hard to go back to 1080p now. but part of me wishes too
part of me wishes i never saw 1440p+

does anyone else feel the same?

with 1080p set and forget with graphics options, no tweaking needed.
cheaper too!
less time looking at new hardware/tweaking more time playing?

i blame tech channels for my love for buying new tech.. yeh im easily persuaded :(

I think it is all down to our desire for better this and better that. I went from 1650x1080 (Which I had for 10 years) to a 2560x1440. I still think that 1080P is good enough for gaming and you can do 1080P gaming quite cheaply now.
My lad has my old 280X and still enjoys his gaming at 1080P and it does that well. He is now waiting for me to upgrade as he gets my old cards and a 280X to a Fury Pro will be a nice upgrade for him.

Also we are all different in our wants and needs. I am a value for money kinda person for the best part, but can be persuaded to part with the cash for a good deal on something special. I usually talk myself into it with the words "It's only money and we cant take it with us" or "If I dont get it now the kids will spend it on crap" etc..etc.. (Better for me to spend it on crap LOL :p)

We all like new toys at the end of the day. I was saving for VR but I have decided to keep the money for Vega (If it is any good) and get VR when it's at Rev.2.

:D

Very interesting topic.
In a way I have downgraded from a eatx to a itx but still wanting high performance. I also got rid of having the chance of having multiple gpus in favour of having one high end card.
I did make a thread in the monitor section that I was thinking of going down to a 27" monitor with gysnc and 144hz, which apparently I would regret replacing my 34" super wide which has no gsync and it's 60hz.

Personally went from Rog Swift 144hz TN to an X34 Predator and have to say FPS' don't feel the same.

It's just too big of a panel personally playing on native resolutions I kinda want my rog back but waiting for the 280hz versions etc ;)

Yes!!
I use 3440x1440 but often wish I never had. The £££ difference is huge.

Now when I see 1080p all I can think of is budget phones and laptops.

many just waste too much time in looking at fps instead of playing the games and enjoying them.

done it myself now just enjoy playing games with friends.

try and find something you can sink your teeth into gaming wise and forget about it.

Good post DG. Personally I've never looked at FPS, I just like putting games at max settings and see if the game feels smooth. I dial the AA back if I can't get the smooth performance.

It actually gets on my nerves knowing that I can't put everything to max/ultra.

It's largely psychological because my eyes can't really see any difference when some settings are enabled/disabled but if my setup can't handle every box ticked I get irritated.

Was testing out a PC recently for a few hours and it would only run Battlefield 1 at 1080p low settings at 40-50fps. Felt so wrong.

Share the same sentiments, alas, went to an X34, and I wouldn't want to touch 1080p with a barge pole, even playing Steep on the TV in the front room via Steam Link @ 2560x1440 on a 65" is "acceptable", well, no not really but it has to do lol.

It's strange because I know a few people that game on quite basic PC setups and they are quite content, I guess in reality that's the good thing about a modular platform, you can get an experience out of it whatever your budget.

Personally I've always seen the PC as a high end gaming platform that needs to really push ahead of consoles to feel worth it, until recently I was actually starting to question my investment on my PC as consoles were/are quickly catching up, and with a 24" 1080p 60hz panel my setup just didn't feel that special any more.

That all changed when I got my x34, it completely invigorated my PC gaming again, after a long time my PC rig felt special, and to be quite honest that's how I want PC gaming to feel, not just because I want it to better consoles, but for the amount of money I invest in my setup I want to feel I'm getting something unique from it, something that differentiates it from other gaming platforms, 1080p @ 60hz started to feel very stale and the combination of the x34's ultrawide aspect ration and the extra hertz just blew me away, I was so lucky getting it from OcUK @ only 500 notes, I wouldn't of been able to afford it at full price.

Same thing here, once I got my 144Hz monitor I knew I wouldn't be able to use a 60Hz monitor on my rig ever again. I don't have an issue with using 60Hz monitors on any PC except mine which is kinda strange.

I showed my friend it and now he wants one too! I can't blame him, we both agree it's a very noticeable difference.

This is why i still game at 2560x1080 (21:9). If i go higher i'll only have to upgrade more often which i cant really justify.

I plugged my current pc in my 4k tv and whilst it looked great, playing on my monitor with DSR in BF1 set to around about 1440p looked just as good in my eyes. When my system gets a bit long in the tooth ill just back down to 1080 again.

The funny thing is I'm one of those people that actually can settle for less, in fact not even call it settling as I enjoy it more. 1440p & 4k & 144hz & ultrawide, all way overrated imo, at least for gaming.

Can't settle for less in terms of Hz and framerate - I don't need a framerate counter to tell the difference between ~60fps and ~100+fps and feel the difference it makes in terms of how well my actions translate into what happens ingame - though a little more tolerance in single player gaming than online.

Fortunately I've mostly been able to get what I needed without having to break the bank - though I'm rarely constrained by budget but neither do I splash for the sake of it.

The only reason its been a little expensive is that the Asus ROG Swift 144Hz TN turned out to be a pretty shoddy bit of **** and I ended up having to replace it with the so far much better Dell equivalent rather than deal with the hassle of RMAing it constantly, etc.

I've been pretty lucky with my GPU purchasing as well i.e. jumping on one of Gibbo's sweet deals for the 1070 before the price stabilised at a higher amount.

1080p 30 to 60 fps is good enough for me,most i spent on a graphics card was £260.

I find it insane people paying £700 for a graphics card, and another £700 on a monitor, then a year later there upgrading there graphics card again.

I cannot go back to 60FPS or TN.

I really wouldn't want to go to 1080p.

However I am happy to lower settings to medium to get the performance I want from the hardware I have as it makes so little difference nowadays.

Learned a while back that i don't need the best. I feel it's people with the top end hardware that tend to focus far to much on Maxed out and tiny little frame drops. Where as i just enjoy the games these days with pretty similar visuals. I here them complaining like hell instead of just accepting that in certain parts of games no matter what they do they will see the odd stutter. My mates machine is worth 3 or 4 times more than mine yet he's always more unhappy than me and always throwing money at it.

I played FF15 for 2 weeks straight on the ps4 and it was a great experience because it was a great game. This was not because i was playing on top end hardware and more to do with the game play. Once people stop chasing max with great frames and just play i feel they will stop pouring as much money chasing a superior experience. The fact is it's more the game itself that will decide your experience if you have a semi decent PC.
