Do you feel your job is worthwhile?

Do you feel you make a worthwhile difference to society in your job?

Well my job allow banks, gov systems, hospital systems, and many other big companies to run without any issues in exchanging data.

its called Search.n.Destroy.Defects

I make new pharmaceutical drugs for testing in human trials. That means that I am a small cog in a big wheel that has definite benefits to people. Every so often I get to speak to patients who actually use some of our medicines and that is always very motivating. When you hear someone tell you that their life used to dreadful but since they took "medicine X" their whole life has improved it really makes you feel like you're doing good work.
Therefore, whilst I may moan about the day-to-day stufff sometimes, I love my job and feel it makes a real difference in the world.

I used to, but my present employment is just a Job.

However, it is worthwhile, maybe not to society, but to me and my family. It pays the bills and funds our lifestyle, allows us to eat etc without relying on the state. Is that not worthwhile in itself?

In a way, I make sure the disinfectant we make actually disinfects the medical devices and doesn't pass on horrendous disease X from skanky patient A onto your child B, only a part of my job but the only part I feel is worthwhile.

I (and others) spent 10 years moving a government's IT system out of the dark ages. That bit was worth it.

Nowadays, with a fairly modern IT system in place, it's huge demands, over-stressed systems, and no budget/forward planning despite repeated calls/proof for it. Still worthwhile, but much more of a battle.

Did we have to copy even the bad parts of uk civil service lol. Thats why after a year in i took off.

Yes.

I have often gone home after a shift having made a difference to a life and having saved a life wither by myself or as part of a team. It isn't a bad feeling.

Sadly, there are a few occassions where I have been unable to do more than I could and people have died. It is an awful feeling and one incident in particular is something i will never forget.

I shove a load of overweight junk mail and advertising through people's doors.

If it wasn't for all the junk and advertising I'd love my job and feel it was worthwhile.

Curse this whole capitalism thing.
Yeah, it struck me other day that lugging around all the junk must in fact be more annoying than receiving it.

On the plus side, this morning I learned that Dominos now have a basil infused base.

I don't make a great deal of difference to peoples lives day to day, however because of the work I've done over the past two years students in halls in Manchester can now get online quicker and easier, and report problems with their halls more easily. So it is something good, albeit not on the same level as saving lives.

In my part time job (doorman/event security) I feel I make more of a difference because generally I'm making people a bit safer and hopefully ensuring people have a better night. That said I'm recently a lot happier in my deskjob than working doors.

I work for one of the many companies which make the money that pays for public sector workers to feel they are doing worthwhile jobs helping society.

I'm taking the moral hit for you guys, no need to thank me ;)

Awwwww aren't you sweet.

And I earn the money working for the public sector so that I can spend it in your shop so you can give the money to the public sector to pay for my wages :D Paradox much?

On a sensible note, no I dont feel my job is worthwhile most of the time. Half of the stuff I do could (and should) be automated while a good chunk of it is simply copying the relevant web page links to email to people who are too dumb to look things up themselves.

Occasionally I fix the odd laptop, which makes me happy. :)
