Howdy all, personally, I have always found it difficult to sit down and play a console game on my own (maybe except GTA 5) without either;

- having the TV on (normally use my PC monitor for gaming)
- having some music on
- having someone else there watching me game

If I try to play a console game without any of the above ambient noise/distraction, I often find I can't make up my mind on what game to play, and will load up the game, only to take the disc out and choose another (rinse and repeat).

PC games I can happily play alone.

Maybe console gaming on my own makes me feel lonely due to the social heritage of console gaming? Maybe console gaming brings out ADHD in me?

Not really! I sit at my desk and drift off into game world for a few hours tbh! Having the TV on as well is a proper distraction!

This. If you can't sit down and play a console game and yet could play the same game on the PC without any issues I guess it's purely psychological.

Maybe it's because when playing PC you can always have TV on in the background when you want to take a quick break, whereas with the console it's not really possible unless you set your PC up to show TV.

I'm like that unless it's multiplayer or a really good story, I have tv or podcasts playing at the same time usually, without podcasts I dont think I'd have managed to finish bound by flame!

And if my missus is on the sofa the volume will be pretty low anyway so I can listen to her talk  :p

I'm exactly the same. If I'm playing on my PC i have to have the TV on in the background (sound down) or if I'm playing on a console i have to have something playing on PC, often Youtube or Twitch.:o

I do like some background music playing but if I'm playing through a story rather than just messing around (GTA V) I'll turn it off so I can hear the dialogue.

I can't actually game when the TV is on, I find it far to distracting. I personally like to game with the lights off, as I feel it's more immersive :)

Never in silence, always alone. :(

If I game without music or a podcast or something playing I wind up getting depressed.

Sometimes I play with music/podcast sometimes I don't entirely depends on the game. I usually do for sports/racing games but not for others. I might do it with a few FPS though.

I always watch youtube or a film. I either have a game on one screen, video on the other or Ocuk a video then playing on the consoles.

I've never had this problem until recently.

But I believe that it's becaise games these days bore me to death when playing alone. Nothing grips me anymore so I end up sitting staring at the screen for 10 minutes, then turning it off to go do something else.

If I'm not gaming with friends now, i only really play quick jump in / jump out games like zen pinball, trials fusion - that sort of thing.

Hopeing a really good, engrosing single player game comes along soon. Only enjoyed about 5 in the last few years and 1 of those was a repeat play of Demon's Souls!

When I'm gaming, that's all I'm doing. It has my complete attention, or as much as I can give to it.

I remember visiting my cousin many years ago when I was only 8 years old, he must have been 11 or so. He was playing Final Fantasy VIII, a game that I'd played extensively despite it only being released recently at that time. He played it differently, however… he was playing it on mute, with a CD player on playing some crappy 90's pop music.

I remember thinking, even at that young age, how sacrilege it was that he was muting out the fantastic score of Final Fantasy VIII and playing other, unfitting music. It felt completely wrong to me. I think that’s when I knew I was a different kind of gamer, and I looked at it like an experience rather than a passive hobby.

If I'm playing a game I give it my full attention.

Same for me, people talking to me just distracts me and I like to hear what's going on in the game rather than have music blaring over the top too. It's the same with PC games for me, I'll sit there in silence playing Football Manager which is little more than a bunch of spreadsheets. :p

I did used to play a lot of music while playing al lthe old JRPG's in the late 90s, early 2000s.
So much so, that I tend to think of specific albums when I think of playing a specific game.

Star Ocean 2 for example was Freak on a Leash by Korn. Can't stand that band now I'm older but would still be able to hear the album if I played the game again.
Metallica albums, and Burning Red by Machine Head go hand in hand with the likes of Suikoden 1/2 and the Breath of Fire.

I still always listened to the OST's though as I did like them. Playing my own music was mostly during areas of grinding or dungeon crawling. I paused it for more important story sections etc to get the full effect of the game.

I always find that if I do have the radio/TV on, I never hear a word of what's being said. The game just draws you in. But I do talk to myself whilst playing. :p

If im at my computer my head phones go on straight away. Having anything on the background would just be a waste of electricity!

Depends on the game, for single player games, I will listen to the OST and ambient sounds of the game. But if I am playing Fifa or a racing game for example, I will play my own music through the iPad. Only so much Martin Tyler you can take :D
