Do you guys keep a back up PC?

I have another pc that my kids use and like someone here already mentioned it is an A64 3000 and its pants.

Dont see the point in having a backup pc for the sake of a backup. Get home insurance its cheaper. Only thing you need is a backup harddrive whether its internal or external.

There is practically no excuse these days for not having a backup machine. I dont mean a hyper super duper machine, but something that will just let you work with your office files, get you back on the internet or whatever... Even a a file server or FireWall FFS. You dont need anything high end just a scrap-yard job will do for many people.

Nope, but I could cobble one together from spares (P3\Athlon level - not that my current PC is that much better). Have an external hard drive already.

Have 3 PC's at the moment, only 1 is decent enough to do any gaming on, but the main back up one would just need a graphics update to game if needed, the 3rd one is a crappy old Athlon 1100 or something takes ages to boot and do anything, but if needed would get me on the net ha

Mine is as in sig.

The girlfriend has a nice machine - X2 3800, 1GB DDR, X800Pro VIVO. If she's not around i'll use that, otherwise i'll use the laptop. It's got a Pentium M 1.8GHz, 1GB DDR (can't remember if it's DDR1 or 2), and Radeon Mobility 9700, so it's certainly not useless for games.

I could "get by" if my rig was in trouble. My motherboard has integrated graphics for if I get graphics card problems anyway! ;)

Well I had a laptop as backup but that's knackered now. I am considering keeping an extra AGP graphics card spare as I've now lost 3 to memory corruption in about 8 months and it seems to take about a week (with money clearing and so on) to get a replacement.

Home insurance doesn't provide instant access to the net and important apps/files :P

When a pc fails it is the data that proves invaluable not whether you can gain internet access ffs.

And there we go guys... The reason why our home insurance is so bloody expensive, is down to that kind of ignorance.

How to read a post and come to the absolute wrong conclusion. My point is backup data on a seperate harddrive and/or dvd's. If through some accident or freak of nature your pc fails like a surge then you have the option to claim (legitimately) on your insurance. My point always being on the backup of valuable data.

I suggest you perhaps look on other forums with regards your insurance costs as i am only paying £12pm for full accidental with £50 excess which has not changed in 3 years.

Why dont you go and ask your mum and step dad what there paying.

Point 1 : Wrong conclusion
I appologise. I should not have jumped in too quickly on that one then.

Point 2 : Other Forums
LOL no, I accept my insurance is what it is. My home is also the place of business, so its business rates, plus I have all my PCs insured for £2500 each, so my insurance, should I ever need to call on it, I feel is very reasonable.

Point 3 : My MUM and ... STEP DAD?
Are you insinuating something?

I have one main machine upstairs (along with the three SETI farm machines), and one downstairs. That last is mainly for use in summer when the spare bedroom can hit over 35oC with all those computers. It can play everything the main machine can, just not at such high settings.

Downstairs machine is currently:

E6600 @ 3400 (not finished with this new motherboard yet)
Abit IP35 (not Pro)
2 x 1GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500
BFG 7900GT
etc.

Main machine is a Q6600 at 3.6GHz, Abit P5K-E WiFi AP, 2GB RAM, 8800GTX

I have one main pc in my room, then a laptop which i use if i want to go on net/msn/emails if im downstairs or in bed.

If im upgrading a key part in my main pc then i just use lappy.

I have an 80gig hdd that i back up data onto, then i back up the main parts of that onto DVD every month (photos mainly)

And then i have a 256mb usb pen drive that i back up the photos only to !

Only started doing that when a hdd broke and i lost a lot of pictures.
