Do you have a dedicated network at home ?

I am on VM 160 Mb broadband - get a solid 159 Mbs - but with kids, a PS3, PS4 , XBox One desktops and laptops Sky Box etc - they do eat up the bandwidth with constant Twitch, YouTube and Netflix. So now I have a segregated network at home for the kids and then mine, with my network having 60% of bandwidth and kids having 40%

Anyone else do the same. I am also planning on having a 3 subnet - as want to do proof of concepts on MAC flooding and VLAN data being leaked and other DDos attacks on my infrastructure.

I've thought about it but feel a bit mean restricting the rest of the family's access to fast internet. So decided against it.

Never seen the need to bother for performance reasons, I've got an 80/20 connection & even with most devices online I don't have any issues with performance (I do use QOS to ensure that my console & PC have higher priority though - although that's more for ensuring low latency)

i used to do this but only when we had a 2mb connection.
I now use QOS to detriment how much bandwidth can be used for what.

I've recommended this many times. In fact, a proper home network should have three sub-networks: one for the kids (and their friends), one for guests, and one for the adults. Most just stick the guests on the kids' network. The thing is, kids' computers are much more likely to get malware, and you don't want that spreading to your PCs. Besides, you don't want the savvy little blighters accessing your porn, do you? The easiest way to do this is to have three or four physical routers.

Bandwidth shaping is a wholly different ballgame.
