Hey guys,

What are your opinions on installing windows updates which you don't need? As an example; The update which allows win7 to correctly read/write to 32gb SD cards?

On a technical note, do these unessential updates slow down the OS?

They won't slow you down, I tend not to bother with things like live etc. But I put the rest on

Some updates fix things that aren't necessarily in the patch notes, so it's always worth it even if it looks irrelevant.

I avoid driver updates and updates for stupid things like Live (no Microsoft, WLM 2011 sucks and I don't want to be offered it).

But apart from that, I tick all boxes and tell WU to get on with it.

Same here. Unless you have checked out the ins and outs of every update and are fully aware of everything it does, it is probably safer not to second-guess them.

Just install them. Drivers and specific MS software you can obviously ignore as above.

I install them. The only one I've had trouble with is the one that blocks autorun.inf files on hard disk. I discovered today that one of the software packages we use relied on that feature. Heaven knows why they did that when they could have just as easily opened the file it pointed at. :/

Fortunately it was easy to work around.
