I wonder if the people who find cabins cool used to build 'dens' as a kid.. I used to always build them. Once built one that was semi underground and then covered it in soil and put moss on top. It was like the telly tubby house thing :p.

Yeah! I had a couple of dens in the woods I also made a rather unstable tree house which had an awesome swing. :)

I had the same thing, when I was about 11 the driveway was getting altered and there was a guy working with a JCB, so I asked him to dig out an area at the edge of the woods near the house (country house). Then I built a wood roof with a tarp and moss and everything... something like the vietcong would build, really massive and completely invisible. It kept filling up with water though. Then a few months later the guy who mowed the lawn unwittingly walked over it and fell inside. I was then forced to spend 3 days filling it in with a shovel :(

used to build tons of dens with my friends, wouldn't be surprised if a couple arent still there. Built them in the woods, up trees, in fields with corrugated iron, in barns from hay bales, and snow caves in the winter.

I'd fit into this. We always used to build them in the woods, some got absolutely massive.
 
Thanks for sharing Kwerk - cabins are awesome, we had a holiday two years ago exploring Wales and we were based in a lovely secluded log cabin without outside hot tub. The log burning stove it came with was phenomenally hot as well :D

I used to have that sort of idealistic view on winter/lakeside cabins and treehouses, but I now just know that the isolation would drive me to despair.

I guess it would be okay with a decent shag for a bit, but after a few days I'd probably go Jack Nicholson on her ass.




In fact, right now I'd probably find wandering the gardens of some mental institution hooked on beta blockers more to my liking than being self sufficient in the back of beyond.

yup... built a den in garden... and a tree house (or more like a few platforms high up in a tree) as a kid - parents freaked out a bit when they saw how high up one of the platforms had been placed...

Would love a cabin... would be perfect for a brief escape in order to say get a project etc.. finished without distractions
