Do you like speed cameras?

Do you?

Those brightly coloured boxes by the side of the road that flash at you to let you know you are speeding?

Speed kills etc, blah blah we know, but wouldn't you rather have more traffic police to catch uninsured drivers, drunk/druggy drivers? Perhaps if they were no more speed cameras then the police would be forced into sending more traffic police out there, and might actually catch some of the worse drivers on our roads.

The lovely people at number 10 have a petition website, set up so they can ignore the masses and do what they want anyway. However, I think that this is a better approach than to send letter bombs, so you can sign a petition to scrap the scameras.

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/scrapcam/

Feel free to let anyone you know that doesn't like these cash machines about this, the more the merrier :)

I like them beside schools, in villages, beside playgrounds..

Not on dual carriage ways with no real accidents on them

Speed cameras dont really solve anything though.

Sure if caught you get £60 and a few points but still if speed is such a big killer its not going to stop speeding.

They have their place, such as outside schools or in areas of high levels of pedestrians. But the way they are used is more to maximise revenue than increase safety.

However, signing that petition is futile, even if millions of people did they won't scrap them so I won't waste my time.

No I don't, however, there is a but to my statement...

I'm guessing (and it is a guess, so don't shoot me for this), that on average, cameras "may" have resulted in lower averages speeds, meaning that in the event of an accident, that less damage will have occured. If that is true, then it's hard to say no to them.

A few further thoughts:
- They are rather obvious, if you're asleep enough to get nailed by one, then frankly you probably deserve the wake up call of the fine. After all, it does imply that the drives road awareness could be questioned and that certainly IS a road safety issue
- Clearly, if you keep to the speed limit, you'll never have a problem
- When people complain about cameras, are they really complaining about the cameras, or the speed limits? It could be argued that if we had "appropriate speed limits", that it wouldn't matter about the camera as we'd all stick to the limit.
- Assuming we really mean the speed limit, then all the people saying that they don't like cameras might aswell say now "hey, I WANT to break the law, ok". The usual response to this is "because most motorists can drive in a responsible manner", which is something I agree with. The problem however is NOT the majority of motorists, it's the pratt who drives like a plonker and needs knee capping. By virtue of so many "normal" drivers saying it's OK to break the speed limit, it's also advocating to the drivers who simply have no comprehension of "reasonable speeds" and genuinely put others at risk.
- I've still yet to hear an appropriate alternative to speed cameras to help improve the above situation. More police, variable speed limits all cost TAX PAYERS MONEY, and I don't remember people on this forum saying "please tax me more". So in the meantime, we're stuck with what we have.

If more people took the easy option and simply abided by the speed limits and drive in a polite manner we'd have:
- No fines from speed cameras
- No requirements for the speed cameras, meaning that they could be dismantled and the money spent better elsewhere
- Less stress for drivers who feel compelled like lemmings to drive faster to keep up with traffic and then hit their brakes on spotting a camera

No I hate them and I fear it is only going to get worse.

Last year the Police won a ruling saying they do not have to make cameras visible unless they wish. All forces have said they have no intention of disguising cameras at present.

I heard on the radio the other day that a camera firm has developed a camera that fits into a cats eye located in the centre of the road. It works very similar to the specs camer and reads your number plate and measures your speed between two points.

Apparently a number of forces have shown great interest in this technology and the company that intends to make it is hopeing for trial run shortly.

they have just installed one on the street next to mine, and I have to say I'm all for it. It is a dual carriageway with a 40 limit, however plenty of drivers nail it along there, there have been 4 accidents in as many months, people need to take it easy.

I have no problem with spead cameras, if you are stupid enought to speed past a huge yellow box on a stick then you deserve all you get!

In 30 zones where there is a real pedestrian hazard I think they're fine. But to be honest few other places warrant their use.

What the hell is their purpose on motorways? All they do here is cause more congestion, accidents and more global warming.

Average speed check > speed cameras..

They are just installing them on the A14 in Cambridge which is just funny as most of the time your're lukcy to get above 25 MPH, what a waste of money!

I agree because at the end of the day they do slow people down (even if just temporarily) and it makes the roads less hazardous for other users like cyclists, pedestrians etc when cars aren't doing 45+mph in the 30 zones. The sad reality is they don't put them in the places like that where they are needed and we end up with them in places that make them look like revenue earners instead.

:D All the accidents on the A14 near Cambridge happen at rush hour anyway when there's a massive tailback both ways from the Milton junction. Pointless.

Im not a fan of ones being installed away from blackspots. Id like to see how many are installed if the money from them was fed only into charity instead of having an entity that directly financialy benefits from law enforcement.

Specs are great, just make sure when you come up to the next spec camera you are in a diffrent lane :)

The A14 install will feature multiple camera gantries, and there are only two lanes. And I assume that loophole will be plugged pretty soon anyway.
