Do You Limit Your Graphics CArd Depending on Monitor?

Simple question really. If your 17" monitor has a native resolution of 1280 x 1024 woul this affect your graphics card choice as a computer gamer? For example the latest Nvidia and ATI cards go quite high but if your monitors resolution is the aformentioned is it worth going for the latest graphics?
 
yes cos as the games get better, fps will drop at them high reses but on a 17" monitor they should stay about the same
