Do you need 120FPS to make 120Hz smooth?

Cool, but if I get around 50-60FPS in a game and buy a 120Hz monitor as opposed to a 60Hz monitor, would it be a more fluid experience?

I know some people can see the difference of 120Hz and 60Hz and some can't, I'm just looking to see if there is a true benefit or not.

60 FPS on 60Hz doesn't feel as smooth as 60 FPS on 120 Hz. You need to de-couple them in your head because they're not linked in the way you're thinking.

The improvements come from the monitor side.

A few more questions if you don't mind.

1.) Do you personally think 120Hz is here to stay and will become the new standard for the foreseeable future or will 240Hz be the next thing?

2.) Does having a 120Hz hinder your FPS compared to 60Hz?

1) I don't think there's much improvement to be had to the naked eye above 120 Hz but it's always possible there'll be advancements in tech.

2) Nah it's independent to the frame rate.

Even if you can't see the improvement, at 120Hz you can enable vsync to stop tearing and do away with the 60Hz input lag. That alone is well worth it!

Something I feel is relevant to that video especially - one of the reasons to go for a 120Hz panel is due to them being more gaming orientated and typically having lower input lag, better pixel response than the average 60Hz panel even when not running 120Hz - so blind testing 60/120Hz on a 120Hz panel won't be as noticeable as blind testing an average 60Hz panel alongside a 120Hz panel.

I also find on my 120Hz monitor I actually dont need Vsync very often. Running at 120Hz seems to get rid of all the tearing I used to have to put up with for the vast majority of titles :)

A lot of this depends on how long you've been into this lark.

I remember all of my CRT screens running 100hz upwards. I was very late to adopt TFT / LCD tech because of crappy 60hz.
