Do you need to give any notice to suppliers in new property if you choose to switch ?

A mate of mine is moving in to a house he phoned up the currant supplier to get a quote which was £20 a month more then what he was quoted by others, he's also been told if he goes with any other supplier he will need to wait 3 weeks to switch, assuming he will then need to pay one months bill with them.

I dont know the answer (never moved) so I thought i should ask, is this true ?

He needs to register with current supplier or they will block any switch. Your friend is liable for standing charges and any energy used from when he took responsibility for the property upto the switch over to the new supplier.

He will be put on an implied contract with the current supplier on their 'standard tariff'. I've just brought a new place and switched with the uswitch app, it was a completely painless process and took about 3 weeks. I'm saving approx £200 per year, my new contract has cheaper standing charges as well as cheaper unit rate costs than what the original supplier was charging.
