Do you read / type like an idiot?

I do.

The way my brain works, I digest entire paragraphs or pages of information in one go, rather than read words sequentially. On one hand, it’s a bit of a super-power: I can read and process things very quickly compared to most others. Hooray!

But it’s also a super-failure, because my mind often changes the specific phrasing of what I’m thinking mid-sentence… leading to tons of grammatical errors, duplicated words or missing short words (a, to, the etc.) as I type which my brain can’t immediately spot. This is compounded because I always know what I meant… so my error rate is very high. This often makes me look like a right derp-squad champion, unless I laboriously proofread. If you ever see me making edits to my posts long after the posting date/time, this is why - I’ve re-read and thought “wtf there’s missing words… that makes no sense :o

Anyone else? Confess your reading / typing herp-derp habits here!

In posts/emails I come across like a douche, people irl are like wth I expected you to be a douche and you're not. Despite knowing this I'm unable to fix my writing.

When reading my brain sometimes decides to skip words for some reason. I usually get the gist of whatever it is I’m reading but do sometimes make mistakes.

I'm sure I have my own writing quirks but it's mostly phone related typos for me. "on" instead of "in", etc etc.

I do however notice other people's writing quirks and end up recognising them by it :o I can recognise a lot of posters on here by their signature typos etc.

I have a friend/colleague who regularly makes spelling mistakes and especially, mixes up "can" and "can not", "did" and "did not", etc. I have learned to interpret him correctly but it must really confuse people working with him!

"Hello, have you changed the access credentials on our company account? I was able to login. The password must have changed."

Recently had a higher up post on our whole trades Teams page - telling us about a mistake that was made. They signed off stating we must make the same mistakes, they didn't proof read or skimmed, as i am sure they meant to say that we must NOT make the same mistake :)

I always pause before sending something, even getting someone to read over, i also put myself in the readers position, they may not have all the info, so i have to be clear in what i am saying and what i want them to do, so:

BLUF the top, if the higher ups are interested, they will read on.

What has happened.

What are the impacts.

What are the LI's

What we are doing about it

Who i have informed.

What/if anything i need from them.

Timelines.

I try not to skim read, because that's when mistakes are made.

Reading: fine I suppose but I'll sometimes re-read something where there's probably no need to.

Typing: it depends on the audience. They may or may not be calibrated correctly.

It's a prerequisite for GD posting.

I run my head into a wall repeatedly before posting.

Everything I type I have to go over it about 5 times, even then I may have to edit a couple of times.
What comes out of my fingers isn't what I tell them in my head.

I'm the same with you, but with typing, in that I'll sometimes miss out a word. E.g. "It was very of you to do this", missing out the all important word "nice". I often mix up singular and plural, as after all, I did fail GCSE English in 1995 and not gone any wiser ever since!

I had a boss who did not exactly exude competence and confessed to me that they had their email set up with a 15 minute delay before sending. This was because they often had second thoughts/realised they had made a mistake after sending a message and this gave them a chance to make corrections. Clearing double checking the message BEFORE clicking send was beyond them. Overall I was not surprised when they got the push quite soon after.
