do you save money by online food shopping?

I find myself going to the supermarket most days just for an excuse to get out of the house and getting baited into buying stuff while I'm there, so considering switching to online shopping to both save money and lose weight.

Question for those who use online shopping - is this a realistic expectation? Do you have better control of your spending by shopping online, or do they just bait you in different ways?

It's been a while since I used online shopping but yes I found it much easier to just buy exactly what I wanted, I wouldn't walk past something and get distracted by fancy packaging or a deal etc. Also easier to compare prices on different pack sizes to make sure you're not paying more per 100g when buying a "Value pack" type thing.

These days I do almost all of my shopping in Aldi/Lidl so the reduced range of products has a similar effect.

My wife and I have this discussion every so often - but yeah, we find that by doing our shopping online we essentially have stopped ourselves doing that usual thing of buying the items that are at the ends of each aisle.

I still nip to Aldi to get things like nappies etc. as the price is so much better - but our weekly shop for the last 7 years has been through Ocado and I reckon we save ourselves maybe 10/15 quid or so avoiding the tempting end of aisle items.

We always do online shopping. I like going to the supermarket but my wife hates it, and online shopping makes it a lot easier.

We've been buying from Ocado the past few weeks - they had some good introductory discounts and the stuff you get is lovely. After the discounts end, I don't know whether I'll shop there.

Do you save money...I don't know. You don't pick up random crap, but you can also choose random crap online.

I spend more online generally. As I don't have to lug it around as much and and pick some nice looking things. I generally get the same stuff each week but add bits here and there. I spend up to 180 quid a week.

I think we spent more when we were doing online shopping tbh.
The struggle is real though walking around a supermarket trying not to pick up junk.

We never got into online, a daily shop by bike is more pleasing although on a temporary hiatus due to eyesight issues.

I know, right? But that's what the OP is talking about - do you save money by removing yourself from the actual shopping part? Well, maybe and it depends. If your control is such that you'll just buy stuff because it's on the internet and *air quotes* not real *air quotes end* (forget the fact that you'll be paying very real money on your card) then probably not.

Go to the gym regardless.

I use online shopping as I hate going into shops, but yes you buy less excess crap also so it's an added benefit.

Ive recently changed to ocado as the quality of stuff (meat and fresh/veg) produce seemed to be declining.

I go when I need something and I walk there. By walking there I seriously limit what I can carry so in turn limit myself getting lots of “3 for 2 deal” or excess and even ultimately just simply spent less.

It helps by the fact that I prefer Lidi lately.

I must admit I’ve not used online shopping since I was in Uni 20 years ago!

I find it helps me not to impulse buy, as I can't get crisps etc when I want, and by the time im doing the online shop even if its the next day the craving has gone.
It is cheaper than my local tesco/sainsbury's small stores, local aldi is cheaper still though, but further away so I don't buy too much there due to carrying it further, also i get distracted by all the nice shops like my friends italian deli on the way lol.

So, yes, online shopping ftw.

We've never done grocery shopping online. I've never really seen the appeal, apart from the lazy aspect of course.
