Just wondering...i've decided to start taking them because i'm not exactly a healthy eater the majority of the time. :o

Does anyone else take them? If so why? For how long? Notice any difference?

I used to and didn't notice any difference, although at the moment I can't take them as I'd risk overdoing it with Vitamin A because of something else I'm taking!

Ah. Is overdosing on Vitamin A bad as i'm currently double the limit...also taking cod liver oil and that has Vitamin A in it as well...

The medics/nutritionists are always saying its unnecessary if you have a balanced diet.
It sounds as though you have doubts about yours so at least it cant do any harm.

One of the more serious symptoms of vitamin A overdose is bone loss which can result in weak or brittle bones. Prolonged overdosage can cause osteoporosis. Vitamin A overdose is also associated with nausea, vomiting, dizziness, blurred vision, an upset stomach, exhaustion, irritability, dry or cracking skin, hair loss, and damage to internal organs, particularly the liver.

!

Although I'm not too sure what the limit is on taking A, I just know I'm not willing to risk it. :p

I take one a day as my diet isn't quite balanced at the moment. And no I don't notice any different, but I'm not expecting to suddenly turn into an Aryan Superman after taking them. :3

No, they do more harm than good. If you eat even remotely normal food then they are not required anyway.

You speak nonsense.

They are there to SUPPLIMENT a diet which should already include fruit and vegetables and along with meat and fish.

They shouldn't be relied upon to fill the gap if you do not each the right amounts.

The only harm they do is to your wallet, other than that only you know if you need to take them or not (to the OP).

Me Doris has been getting me some recently since I have been working hard & got ill etc
Not noticed any difference at all yet but it does have that Placebo effect of feeling a bit better that you have taken summit.

berroca for a hangover/cold/flu

centrum multivit most days.

Cant say i notice THAT much difference on the centrum, the berroca however definitley helps a hangover or if im feeling like a cold is coming on.

I take specific ones because there is no fish in my diet, at all. And my mum rambled on about how eating fish helps, cant remember what they are because i forgot to bring them back to camp with me :/

No, I'm convinced they give me spots, are not easily metabolised and smell of cornflour. Think I'll give 'em a miss. Just try to eat a varied diet rather than trying to replace something that may not actually be missing.

yep, take a decent multivitamin and mineral. gets rid of my scaly/dry elbows and returns them to normal. If I stop taking them it comes back.

Used to take :

Zinc : 15mg every day for 15 years - Definately worked for me, and seeing as 70% of the population are zink definicient (even with a varied diet) - I fail to see why people wouldn't need it.

DMAE : if you want to see in almost complete darkness, have memory like a computer and be able to concentrate better than Einstein. A serious chemical to supplement.

Now only take :
High strength B Complex : definately works. Super increase in energy levels & allowed me to train harder. Also great for getting rid of hangovers super quick.

1000mg Evening Prim. oil / Cod liver oil : Great for my Joint/muscle pains and cleared my skin up - although the increase in ear wax might be annoying to some.

So to state : All the vitamins/supplements I take have had a marked effect for the better. And my diet is varied, complete and not full of rubbish. I eat 3 or 4 straight meals a day - I eat a lot.

To say you don't need supplements if you have a normal diet is rubbish. Some people can't metabolise certain chemicals for a variety of reasons. Most peoples digestion is unbalanced and misaligned so they do genuinely need additional suplements to get the vits/minerals they need, especially in this day and age, where we are all rushing our food and not eating properly. But taking vits is trial and error. Some Will work for you, most won't. The key is work out what you think your problem is - and then find what vitamins/minerals you could be lacking in - or have trouble absorbing/using.

As for multivits, they might be a waste of time - depending on their contents. It's best to read up and understand what chemicals you need and when to take them. Also don't take any notice of the RDA listings on the back - as they are useless/pointless.

Try reading Patrick Holfords book : New Optimum Nutrition or Optimum nutrition for the brain. Pretty heavy going, but will give you a better understanding of what your digestion is doing, and just what your body/brain needs.
